Some rare abreviations on the Second World War panel.

A NAAFI name and I'm assuming a Home guard name.

NSRY could perhaps be Nottinghamshire Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry? Here are his CWGC details:

There is also a NAAFI lass named on the WW2 panel at (St John's Town of) Dalry in Dumfries and Galloway.

There are 3 Falside's listed on this memorial which is a very uncommon surname. So uncommon that there are only 3 Falsides listed on the CWGC website:

I thought that possibly William was the father of John and James until I looked him up on the CWGC:

He died aged 35 so oculdn't have been. However, when I looked James up I found:

Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 66 to 68.
Memorial: TYNE COT MEMORIAL

So William and James were brothers But what of John?

From the 1901 census, the only Falside family in Eskdalemuir were
Rev John age 57
his wife Jemima age 44
Elisabeth 8
Annabella 6
John 5
James 3

William Falside from Eskdalemuir (age 17) was living with his aunt and uncle in Govan as a scholar.

So - 3 brothers it is then Crying or Very sad

L/Cpl, 1460, John Cuthbert Rutherford Falside, 1/5th KOSB was killed in action on 29th June 1915 at Gallipoli. From Capt. Scott-Elliot's 'War History':

"On this night the Battalion was suddenly ordered to fill a gap in the firing-line to the right of the R.N.D. A French unit had left its place without waiting for the arrival of its relief. However, the French soon arrived and took over their section.

One man was killed and about 15 wounded by enemy rifle fire."

John was 19 years old and an apprentice lawyer. He is buried at Skew Bridge Cemetery, Grave II. F. 17.

It's a very sad story.
However, it's a tribute to this Forum that the story of the Falside's has been uncovered after 90 years.

The names of the 3 Falside brothers also appear on the Lockerbie War Memorial.
