UKNIWM Ref: 44166

OS Map Ref: NX 973 817

The memorial is on a small hill to the North of the village on the left of the road. Access is difficult and involves a climb over a style and up a very steep bank. Access by wheelchair would be completely impossible and difficult for anyone with mobility problems.

There are two men listed as ANZACS here but it doesn't make clear if they served in the Australian Imperial Force or the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Unfortunately the names are J Brown and J Smith which wouldn't narrow it down much if you try and search for them.

However it is actually J S Brown on the memorial and I'm assuming there is a spelling mistake below and it should say Kirkmahoe, and this is the right man

BROWN, JAMES SCOTT
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: New Zealand Medical Corps
Age: 28
Date of Death: 21/09/1916
Service No: 3/1688
Additional information: Son of the late Alexander and Agnes Money Brown, of Dalswinton Gardens, Kirkmahoc, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Memorial: CATERPILLAR VALLEY (NEW ZEALAND) MEMORIAL

From The Scotsman 19 November 1920.

    WAR MEMORIALS

KIRKMAHOE.— A memorial in the form of an obelisk in commemoration of the men belonging to the parish of Kirkmahoe who fell in the war, was unveiled by Colonel Crabbe of Duncow. The memorial contains the names of thirty-three men.

I suggest this topic is renamed to include the name Kirkmahoe parish.

I'll do this one now, but just to let you know that I am in the process of renaming all in D&G that need it (including the main list). Expect it to take me a week or so as some might need a bit of research where the memorial itself is not clear.
