This memorial is set apart from the village on the road which leads to the footbridge across the Tweed.

UKNIWM Ref No. not listed

Ian,
It looks like the memorial has been made from 2 parts, the upper half being joined just above the first name.
Would the cross be a later addition or was it constructed like this from the first do you think?

Interesting - I hadn't noticed this. Compare this memorial with Newstead. It must be the same sulptor. I suspect it may be an 'off the peg' pattern.

I've noticed a couple of other memorials with the circular cross (if you know what I mean Shocked ) in the middle. Southdean in the Borders and Lochearnhead have part of this cut out.

Perhaps the cross was done by a sculptor and the names were carved by a local, and cheaper, stone mason?

A reasonable theory, but given the choice between sculpting the cross and carving the very even, precise lettering - give me the cross every time!
