Glendale - Isle of Skye

The Glendale war memorial is a rustic grey granite obelisk on a pedestal which rests on a low rough cairn of local stone. The names of the dead are listed on granite tablets set into the face of the pedestal and these include the men of the surrounding communities. The monument stands above the roadside within its own enclosure surrounded by railings. The memorial is apporached from the road by a series of steps set into the slope.

From a photo by Pat Anderson it appears that the railings have been removed and a low dry-stane dyke erected, along with a walkway to the memorial itself.

This War Memorial is located beside a cemetery and as mentioned by Mark when I visited the memorial in 2008 the metal railings had gone and a walled surrounding the memorial had been erected . The sheep are still there so watch your step when walking to it !

Roll of Honour for Skye & Lochalsh by Graham Ross . Copies held at both Portree Library and Inverness library.

Glendale War Memorial :

The Glendale War Memorial was unveiled and dedicated on Tuesday, 28th July 1924 in the presence of a great crowd of friends and relatives of the 32 Men commemorated on it . After a prayer in Gaelic by the Reverend Murdo McCaskill, the Free Presbyterian Church elder the Memorial was unveiled by Captain Martin of Glendale . The closing prayer was givenby the Reverend Gillies of the United Free Church .

The Memorial , in the form of a rough hewn grey granite obelisk on which is a Calvary Cross surmounted by Scottish Thistles , is situated close to the road to the village cemetery in the middle of the Glen.
