The sculptor Charles Pilkington D'or Jackson's business papers are lodged in the National Library, Edinburgh, Accesssion Number 7445. In Box 2, Files 54 & 58 there are a number of letters concerning Jackson's work which was paid for by the Scottish Women's Hospital for Home and Foreign Service.
Designer was the architect F.C. Mears. asccording to Jackson's press release it was cut from a single block of pale rose coloured stone. The angels are carved in a medieval style and carry the symbols of Faith, Hope and Charity, and he stated the "restrained use of ornament pay an eloquent tribute to the subject by suggesting the simplicity and nobleness of character and leading the mind to connect her with the heroines of the past". According to one of the letters the unveiling was planned for 21/3/1922 but there was nothing else to confirm if this went to schedule.
According to a letter dated 20/1/1921 from Messrs. Galbraith & Winton, Masons of Glasgow they were supplying a pink Burgundian stone for the memorial also known to the French as Rose of St. George stone. I would assume this was the stone used but there is no further correspondance to confirm this. |

For what it's worth, I was born in Elsie Inglis' hospital.
