I found the above card attached to a wreath on the new Scottish Memorial at Frezenberg.
What I find surprising is the number of casualties it displays and the fact that we, as a Scottish Forum, have had little input from any community on Skye or environs.
I would have thought that it would be easier for a person on Skye to post on this forum than travel to Flanders but obviously we're still not getting all the publicity we need. _________________

18 months on and I've still not been able to shine any light on the claims of the above card.
Can anyone else? _________________

It would appear that Neil MacNicol, the author of the memorial card, is in error. Graham Ross the author of the RoH for Skye and Lochalsh lists five men only who were killed during WWI with Torrin connections.
Pte James MacKinnon 5th Camerons
Col-Sgt Alexander MacKinnon 1/5th Argylls (no relationship given to above)
Pte John MacKinnon 10th Argylls (no relationship given to above)
Pte Norman MacLeod Central Ontario Regiment.
Pte Farquhar Stoddart 1st Camerons
All the above men were born in Torrin. As stated on the card, Torrin conisists of few dwellings, there is no War Memorial. |

I would suggest that this Neil MacNicol is actually guilty of vast mis-representation and exaggeration.
The card is sad, not only due to its inaccuricies but it also belittles the memories of the men of Torrin who did perish in the Great War. _________________

Received following from Roy who looks after www.blaven.com which deals with Torrin.
"I've never heard of this before and doubt the numbers. A couple of years ago I looked through the census data for Skye and, quoting from my website;
"At its peak in the last century around 120 people lived in the community
[of Torrin]. By 1989 this had dropped to 40 people. Today this has risen to
around 65"
Communities on Skye that I know with WW1 memorials and are of comparable size to Torrin commemorate 10-20 people. The memorial in Broadford that covers the Torrin area lists approximately 50 names including some of those listed in the forum post by "LondonScot"
htm).
So the loss and injury of 262 men simply does not add up." |
