St Mary's Metropolitan Roman Catholic Cathedral War Memorial
Location: St Mary's Metropolitan Cathedral, York Place
OS Ref: NT 259 743

Not to be confused with St Mary's Epsicopal Cathedral at the West End, the memorial takes the form of two framed scrolls and the stations of the cross along the South wall of the church. There is no Second World War Memorial. The doors over the scrolls are opened for two weeks every year from the 1st of November until after Remembrance Sunday.

I would be interested to know what the Latin inscription is.

Example of the scroll

The photos of the names are not that clear in the images on photobucket so I will post a transcription.

The stand at the bottom of the cross is a Korean War Roll of Honour which will get its own post.

I thought I was going to struggle with Joseph. Despite the SNWM giving his birthplace as Edinburgh the 1901 census shows him as having been born in Italy. However no siblings were were born in Scotland so I though his birthplace was going to elude me. CWGC came up trumps though.

As I have said before its amazing what coincidences turn up. I've extracted the following text from the Irish War memorials site:

Who is doing this?
Up to September, 2004, all of the sites were recorded by Michael Pegum, who lives in Dublin. His grandfather was killed in Flanders in 1916 and is buried there. A cousin of his, from Glin, Co. Limerick, was killed in the Battle of Polygon Wood in 1917, and his name is on the wall at Tyne Cot.

Visiting the battlefields led to an interest in memorials in Ireland to those who had died in wars. It soon became clear that they carried a great deal of material, of interest to family historians, which was inaccessible. It was to record these names, and make them available to anyone, anywhere, that this work has been undertaken.

Others are now adding records to the inventory, and more contributors will be welcomed (see 'How can I contribute?', above).

Other contributors

Brendan Hayden
Tadhg Moloney
Maria Murphy
John Pegum
Warren Lawless

I wonder who Michael's grandfather was?

Thanks to Fr Michael Regan for the translation at the top of the memorial.
Tuis fidelibus vita mutatur non tollitur.
Requiescat In Pace.

For your faithful life is changed not ended.
Rest in peace.

From the preface for the dead at the Requiem Mass

Can anyone identify this man?

MIERS , C , Captain, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. France 25.9.14

I suspect he may be the father of Anthony Miers VC. According to Wikipedia Miers' father was an army oficer killed in the Great War. He is buried in the Catholic section of Tomnahurich Cemetery in Inverness and Miers VC was schooled at Edinburgh Academy.
