ANDERSON, J.P. S-F-HS.

James Parker Anderson was born on 11 December 1884 at 24 Canongate, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
The son of William Anderson and Mary Parker who had married on 24 March 1884 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Mary died in 1887 in Jedburgh and William re-married in 1888 in Edinburgh to Margaret Silver.
In 1891 the family were still in Jedburgh but by 1901 they had moved to Newcastleton, Roxburghshire; while James was at school in nearby Langholm, Dumfriesshire and living with his grandparents, James and Agnes Anderson at 39 Eskdaill Street, Langholm.
James graduated M.A. From Edinburgh University in 1908 and in 1911 he was an assistant teacher in Moffat, Dumfriesshire and lodging at 6 Grange Road.
When he married Mary Glen Alexander in Perth in July 1913, he was a teacher at the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, Lewis in the Western Isles and he and Mary and their family were living at Glen House in Stornoway when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders from an Officer Cadet Unit on 18 December 1917. James was serving with the the 4th (Reserve) Battalion at Glencorse Barracks in Edinburgh when he became ill in the late summer of 1918 and he died of lymphadenoma and heart failure in the Military Hospital in Edinburgh Castle on 26 December 1918. He was 34 years old.
He is buried in Perth (Wellshill) Cemetery, Perthshire.
Also named on the Langholm War Memorial, on the Moffat Academy memorial and on the Nicolson Institute War Memorial (but as Lt. Royal Scots)

Asa Craven – age 31 – Second Lieutenant: 8th attached to 11th Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
After training at the Edinburgh Provincial Training Centre at Moray House, Asa had been schoolteacher at Laurieknowe School in Maxwelltown since 1908 and was living in Park Road, Maxwelltown when he enlisted for officer training at the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps in August 1915. He was commissioned to the Black Watch in July 1916 and had been at the front for just six weeks when he was killed.
Born 1884 in Denholme, Bradford, Yorkshire. Son of the late James Edward Craven of Hewenden Mill, Yorkshire and of Rebecca (Hey) Craven of 21 Barlow Terrace, Keighley, Yorkshire.
Killed in Action on 19 October 1916 and buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Laurieknowe School memorial and on the Maxwelltown Burgh and Troqueer Parish War Memorial in Dumfries.
