I've got a puzzle
Robert Thomson 40294 Private 12th Battalion Royal Scots - Died 21/10/1916 CWG Bazentin-le-Petit Military Cemetery, Somme, France.

Except the local newspaper of the time reports that his wife and father have been informed that he died of wounds in hospital in London?
All the data in the paper is as above as are the names and occupations (both father and son were gamekeepers) and the birth and marriage certificate information confirms, so I'm as sure as I can be that it is the same person.

Could he have been returned to France for burial?

Kenneth

never heard of bodies moving in that direction for burial my best guess is that the hospital had an English name so they assumed it was in England but it was actually one of ours in France. Unless anyone else here has an idea, it might be worth posting the question on GWF

I've e-mailed CWGC so I'll wait for their response.

He will not have returned from UK to France.

Various sources confirm this man died in France. As Paul suggests, it is likely that some confusion by the family has resulted in the newspaper detail.

This Robert Thomson was formerly 25149 KOSB

Thanks guys - it did seem odd
Can I ask where the info about being a KOSB came from - it makes sense given that he was a D+G man.

The sad thing I've just uncovered is that his brother James Thomson who enlisted in Australia (16th Battalion Australian Infantry AIF), survived Gallipoi and was wounded on the Western Frontin 1916, only to be killed on 9 January 1917 when a building he was clearing collapsed on him and his work party.
Both are remembered on the War Memorial at Southwick.

Kenneth

The info came from his Medal Index Card. He was awarded the War and Victory medals. This means he was not overseas before 1916. He may have been called up when Conscription began in early 1916.
