Embo War Memorial
Location: Embo Village Hall
OS Ref: NH 817 927

I have to apologise, I thought I had a photograph of the brass war memorial plaque in Embo village hall. I don't. I do have a list of the names though

MacKAY , Donald , Private , 7th Bn Seaforth Highlanders
MCKAY , John , Private , New Zealand Machine Gun Corps
McKAY , William , Private , 12th Bn Highland Light Infantry
MURRAY , George S , Private , 6th Bn Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders
ROSS , John D , Private , 19th Bn Canadian Expeditionary Force

1939-1945

FRASER , William , Seaman , Royal Naval Reserve
MACKAY , Donald , Sergeant , 5th Bn The Seaforth Highlanders
MACKAY , John L. , Seaman , Merchant Navy
McKAY , Thomas , Leading Seaman , Royal Naval Reserve
MacLEOD , George , Sergeant , 235 Squadron, Royal Air Force
ROSS , Alexander , Seaman , Royal Naval Patrol Service
SWANSON , Donald , Private , 5th Bn The Seaforth Highlanders

The Embo War Memorial was unveiled in recent years. I think it was unveiled on VJ- Day 1984. Before that the main parish memorial in Dornoch was the village's war memorial.

The Great War list was taken from the names on the Dornoch Free Church memorial which identifies the fallen by district. The Second World War names were collected by asking the older folk in the village.

Unusually for a Scottish memorial the honour guard was provided by the United States Navy. In this case a detachment from the now closed USN Communications base at Forss, near Thurso.

This photo of the day of the unveiling was provided to me a few years ago byJeanette Cumming who was on the Village Hall committee in 2002.

Thanks to Chris Stokes and Morag Sutherland for providing me with this photograph of the plaque.

It used to hang in the old village hall but that became unuseable and the current community centre where it will hang is in need of renovation.

In the mean time it is in storage.

Thanks

Adam

A photograph of the memorial is towards the bottom of this web-page.

http://cosuthtribute.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/War%20Memorial%20Dornoch

It is WMR 76124.

As of April 2018 it still seems to be in storage awaiting completion of the renovation works
