Hi,
I've visited Leuchars cemetery a few times and have photos of all the headstones.
Some info on A M ten Herkel. I believe the correct spelling should be Kerkel.
On 10 August 1941 while on a training sortie Hudson N7396 NO-V, 320 Sqn crashed 3 miles west of Dunino, whilst low flying. The aircraft burnt out and the cause was attributed to pilot error owing to over confidence and lack of experience on type.
Two of the crew Res Sergt W Hijkoop and Res Sergt A M ten Kerkel, both Dutchmen, were buried in Leuchars cemetery.
Info from Coastal Command Losses, Vol 1 by Ross McNeil.
Warrant Officer G J Forbes
Transit from Tain, Ross and Cromarty, to Leuchars
206 Squadron, RAF (Leuchars, Fifeshire - 18 Group)
Liberator GR.VI BZ961 - at the end of an anti-submarine patrol the previous day was diverted to Tain, landing there at 2352. Took off for return to base on the 14th at 1719 captained by Fg Off J W Bayard, RCAF, and on approaching Leuchars from the west in low cloud and poor visibility flew into high ground at Redstone Quarry, Balmullo, at 1815. All 11 crew and an Air Ministry meteorologist on board died. An RNZAF and RAAF wireless operator-air gunner, one of the two RAF navigators, and the captain are buried at Leuchars.
