I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed photos and information to this forum. I probably haven't said that enough, but I'll tell you why I say it now.
I've been researching the fallen of the banks that comprise HBOS plc for about a year or so now, and I have about 65 names that I have so far been unable to trace. All I have at most for them is a name, rank and the location of the branch they worked at.
Thanks to the informaton in this forum, I have located two of these "missing" men, purely by checking the branch location against the civic memorial. And they were on it, on the memorials for Forres and Oban.
Without the information you folks have provided, these two men would have remained as just a name on a list. Now I have some more information on them.
Well done to you all. Let's keep at it so this forum goes from strength to strength.
Regards,
David

David
Do you want to post a list of the other 63 unidentified names to see if we can help match them to names on war memorials?

I need to go over my list again as I haven't updated it in a while, but yes, I'll get on to it. |

I know you're a wee bit busy with other things just now but do you want to find the time to post a list of your 'missing' to see if we can help out while your research is temporarily on the back burner?
Cheers

Next list is the British Linen Bank. This is the difficult one, as there's no branch information.
Surname and then forenames only:
Arnott John
Brodie William
Carmichael Alexander since found
Clement Peter since found
Coates Robert
Corrigall John since found
Dick William (this name has R.S. after it. Obviously Royal Scots as there was another William Dick listed as RFA)
Donaldson James
Ireland William
McBean Alexander
McCulloch John Allan since found
McFadyen Neil
Macintyre Alexander Matheson
Mackay Gordon
Paton John
Robertson George
Scott Arthur James
Scott James Allan since found
Simpson Robert Graham since found
Sinclair John
Smith William Thomson
Tulloch John
Watson John
Latest Edit: I visited the HBOS Archives today (31/10/07) and have since identified all the British Linen Bank dead.

Next list is the Union Bank of Scotland. Surname, First name, then branch. There is a Roll of Honour for this bank, so I should be able to get more for these names.
Harvey John Kilmarnock since found
Henderson Thomas Glasgow
Mair Alexander Dumbarton
MacKechnie Angus Kincardine since found
McLay Walter Glasgow
Smith William Banff since found
Strang James Gourock
And lastly, two names from the Halifax. These are difficult, as they are almost certainly English and they are fairly common names. Nothing to determine who they are on CWGC. Some more homework required for these names:
Crossley Herbert
Sykes Albert
I should add that some of the names I've posted here may have been identified. The list of "Unknowns" hasn't been updated in a little while. There may only be two or three names identified from this lot though. |

Latest update:
You might see from a post above that I visited the HBOS Archives today, and managed to go through a number of records that have enabled me to identify most of the men on these lists.
I should also add that I found the Roll of Honour for the British Linen Bank, hand-written, in a box file amongst some other related records. |
