Memorial is situated within the church which is on George IV Bridge Edinburgh. Thanks to Rachel Fitzgerald for information. The church has undergone a number of unions with other churches and this has led to name changes. This memorial is for the original church and the FA Martin mentioned was the minister's son.

Augustine United Reformed Church was part of the Congregational Union of Scotland, which entered the URC in 2000.
Augustine Cong united with Bristo Cong in 1941 but WW2 names logically rule it out.
They united with Dalkeith Road URC (part of the "Churches of Christ" denomination which entered the URC in 1981) in 1992 but the CoC's prominent pacifism possibly rules it out.
Other options would be Hope Park & Buccleuch Cong which they united with in 1978, or Dalry URC which they united with in 2005. Latter is quite recent. |

I was in Augustine United Church during "Doors Open Day" on the weekend.
They have 4 war memorials from WWI and have produced a rollerbanner to discuss the history and that of some of the constituent congregations in the war. It stated the memorials came from Augustine itself; Dalry URC which I think is now flats; Bristo Congregational, a few hundred yards off on Forrest Place but now a café/restaurant; and Edinburgh Church of Christ in Dalkeith Road - now an independent RC church. These various denominations are all part of the United Reformed Church, thus the varied congregational unions.
However, during the day a member of congregation who originated with the CofC apparently suggested that of Dalkeith Road was not from the CofC but of St Leonards Church of Scotland, whose building CofC bought c1932.
It has far more names than the others despite CofC being a small sect.
Also many CofC congregations held to pacifist views. |
