Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

PTE. THOMAS CLARK. Royal Scots
Thomas Clark – age 21 – Private (1295) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was a member of the Thistle Lodge of Free Gardeners, Penicuik and was employed at Beil House, Prestonkirk, East Lothian when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in December 1914 but he was badly wounded at Neuve Chapelle in mid-March 1915 and had a leg amputated at the 3rd Stationary Hospital in Rouen. Thomas died there a few weeks later. (Source: Mid-Lothian Journal 16/4/1915 p.5)
Born 1893 at Cockpen, Stobhill, Midlothian. Son of the late John Clark and of Mary Alston (Girdwood) Clark (both died 1914) formerly of Torwoodlee, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 9 April 1915 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

ROBERT ADAMSON
Robert Adamson – age 36 – Private (40982) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert was a gamekeeper at Wood End, Stenton when he enlisted as Private (2897) in the Ayrshire Yeomanry in July 1916. He was posted to the 6/7th RSF in France in December 1916. He was wounded and evacuated to the Northampton War Hospital in August 1917. When he had recovered he was posted to the 1st RSF in November. Robert was killed almost a year later near Cambrai.
Born 1881 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Son of the late Margaret (Dick) Adamson (died 1897) and of James Adamson of Donibristle, Fife. Husband of Jane Drummond (McGregor) Adamson of Wood End, of Beil Mill, Prestonkirk and of Hardgate, Haddington, East Lothian who he married in 1910 in Kirkcaldy, Fife.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.


GEORGE BAYLEY
George Baird Bayley – age 20 – Second Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was educated at Cheltenham College and at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst from where he was commissioned in the KOSB in January 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 15 August 1914 but he was wounded at Le Cateau at the end of the month and he was invalided home. George had only just rejoined his battalion when he was killed at Ypres.
Born 1894 in Spott, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Isaac Fenton Bayley and of Grace Jane (Pott) Bayley of The Halls, Spott.
Missing in Action on 26 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium
Also named on an individual memorial in Stenton Parish Church and on the adjacent Spott Parish War Memorial.


THOMAS BELL
Thomas Bell – age 22 – Private (23168) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was a constable in the “D” Division of the Edinburgh City Police Force when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined his battalion in France in September 1915.
Born 1893 in Spott, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Elizabeth (Veitch) Bell (died 1914) and of George Dickson Bell of Floral Cottage, Beil, Stenton.
Missing in Action on 27 February 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the “D” Division memorial in Haymarket Police Station, Edinburgh.

T. BROTHERSTON
Thomas Brotherston – age 32 – Private (3033) 44th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
In 1901 Thomas was a grocer's vanman in Stenton and he was a grocer in Donnybrook, Western Australia when he enlisted in November 1916. He sailed from Freemantle in January 1917 and landed in England in March before joining his battalion in France in September but he was killed less than a month later.
Born 1885 in Lauder, Berwickshire. Son of the late Christina (Brydon) Brotherston (died 1906) and of Thomas Brotherston of Pitcox, Stenton and of Cocklaw, Innerwick, East Lothian. Husband of Agnes Ellen Brotherston of "Melville," Princess Road, Claremont, Western Australia.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1917 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.

Thomas Curr – age 26 – Second Lieutenant, 4th (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 18th Battalion (4th Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
Thomas was educated at Dunbar before he became a Student of Arts and Science at Edinburgh University. He graduated M.A. with honours in Maths, and B.Sc. in 1914. He enlisted as Private (2482) in the 9th Royal Scots in October 1914 and was commission in October 1915. He joined the 18th HLI in France in May 1916.
Born 1890 in East Linton, Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of William Simpson Curr and Annie Simpson (Bisset) Curr of Biel Mill, Stenton and of Ninewar, Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1916 and buried in Faubourg D'amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Dunbar Burgh and Parish War Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.

WILLIAM DENHOLM
William Denholm – age 21 – Private (23147) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a baker in Stenton when he enlisted in May 1915 and he joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1896 in Dunbar, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of John and Mary (Hogg) Denholm of Iron Square, Stenton.
Missing in Action on 8 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


WILLIAM GLEN
William Glen – age 29 – Stoker 1st Class (308855) H.M.S. Cressy, Royal Navy.
William joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry in about 1904 but transferred to the Royal Navy as a Stoker in September 1905. He was awarded the Naval General Service Medal (Persian Gulf) for his time on the cruiser “Highflyer” in 1911/13. He joined the cruiser “Aboukir“ in September 1913 and transferred to the “Cressey” in June 1914. Three months later the cruisers HMS Aboukir, HMS Hogue and HMS Cressy were torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U9 while on patrol off the Hook of Holland.
Born 1885 in Darnick, Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Walter Glen (died 1899) and of Mary (Scott) Glen of Stenton.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 22 September 1914 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.


ROBERT HAGGERTY
Possibly:
Robert Haggerty – age 23 – Private (12421) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Robert served his apprenticeship at Lanark Lodge in Duns, Berwickshire and was a gardener in Forres in Moray when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915. Robert was killed when leading a bombing party.
Born 1892 in Duns. Son of James and Jane (Young) Haggarty of 40 Newtown Street, Duns.
Missing in Action on 17 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Duns War Memorial and on the Episcopal Christ Church memorial in Duns.

WILLIAM HALLIDAY
(Served as McKENZIE)
William Halliday – age 32 – Sergeant (13262) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William enlisted for overseas service as McKenzie at Valcartier, Quebec in September 1914. He had previously served with the Border Regiment in South Africa for 7 years and with the 31st Regiment British Columbia Horse. He sailed from Quebec with the 5th Battalion in October 1914 and landed in France in February 1915. William was promoted to Corporal in May and to Sergeant in October.
Born 1882 in Holme Abbey, Wigton, Cumberland, where for some years his father was the Station Master. Son of James and Jane (Hogg) Halliday of Kirkside Cottage Stenton.
Killed in Action on 2 June 1916 and buried in Larch Wood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery, Belgium.

A. MARJORIBANKS
Alexander Marjoribanks – age 35 – Captain/Adjutant, 52nd Sikhs (Frontier Force) attached to the North Waziristan Militia Military Police and Levies
Alexander was commissioned from the Royal Military College to the Indian Staff Corps in January 1900. He was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1901 and served in the Somaliland (1902-4), and Mohmand (1908) Expeditions. He became a Captain in the 52nd Sikhs in January 1909. Alexander died of cholera at Datta Khel, India and was buried there but his grave was lost.
Born 1879 at the Manse, Stenton. Son of the Rev. George Marjoribanks and Elizabeth (Leslie) Marjoribanks of The Manse, Stenton,
Died on Service on 28 September 1914 and named on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate) India
Also named on an individual memorial in Stenton Parish Church,


JAMES Y. McKINLAY
James Young M'Kinlay – age 25 – Private (40952) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1911 James was a gamekeeper living with his family in Stenton. He died in a Field Ambulance.
Born 1892 in Stenton. Son of George and Jane (Young) M'Kinlay of Stenton.
Died of Wounds on 20 May 1918 and buried in Harponville Communal Cemetery, France.

ALEXANDER NESS
Alexander Ness – age 24 – Private (S/15469) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Alexander enlisted in November 1914 and was posted to his battalion in France in March 1915 but a month later he suffered sever spinal wounds and was evacuated to the Military Hospital at Netley in Hampshire where he died.
Born 1890 at Whittingehame, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of William and Margaret (Black) Ness of Deuchrie, Stenton.
Died of Wounds on 7 May 1915 and buried in Stenton Cemetery. (CWG)


JAMES TURNBULL
Possibly:
James Turnbull – age 21 – Lance Corporal (11154) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was serving with the 1st KOSB at Lucknow in India in August 1914. They sailed for Egypt in November before moving to England in December. They sailed again in March 1915 and landed at Cape Helles on Gallipoli on 25 April. (Source: Medal Roll/Card)
Born 1894 in Dunbar, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of John and Marjorie (Allan) Turnbull of 3 Castlegate, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 28 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dunbar Burgh and Parish War Memorial.


REGD. WHITTERSON (sic)
Reginald Whitteron – age 24 – Private (325331) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1911 Reginald was a gardener at Ripley Castle Gardens in Yorkshire and he was a gardener on the Biel Estate, Stenton when he enlisted as Private (1240) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in October 1914. He joined his battalion in France in February 1915 but he was wounded in July 1916 and after treatment in the 12th General Hospital in Rouen he was evacuated to Merryflatts War Hospital in Govan, Glasgow. He rejoined his battalion in France in March 1917.
Born 1894 in Pocklington, Yorkshire as Guy Reginald Whitteron. Son of Richard Warwick Whitteron (died 1897) and of Kate (Cundall) Whitteron who married John Edward Teale in 1901 in Leeds.
His sister Margaret Whitteron of Church Street, Whitby, Yorkshire was named as his next of kin.
Missing in Action on 22 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


ALEXANDER THOMSON
Alexander Thomson – age 33 – Private (M2/204032) Army Service Corps.
In 1911 Alexander was a groom and gardener, living with his family at Thorntonloch, Innerwick, East Lothian. He died in the Military Hospital at Netley in Hampshire.
Born 1884 at Biel, Stenton as Thompson. Son of James and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Thompson. Husband of Isabella Robertson (Dickson) Thomson of Knowes, Prestonkirk who he married in 1906 in Stenton as Thomson.
Died on Service on 3 May 1917 and buried in Stenton Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Innerwick Parish War Memorial.

ALEXANDER BRODIE
Alexander Brodie – age 19 – Private (14780836) Royal Scots.
Born 1926 in Dunbar as Alexander Dodds Brodie.
Grandson of Alexander and Helen Paton (Dodds) Brodie of Haddington, East Lothian. (Source: family grave in Stenton Parish Churchyard)
Died on Service on 28 January 1946 and buried in Brussels Town Cemetery, Belgium.


JOHN BUCHAN
Possibly:
John Sydney Buchan – age 21 – Sergeant (1565131) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John was an air gunner on his Wellington bomber of 11 Operational Training Unit which had taken off from RAF Westcott in Buckinghamshire for a night training flight but the aircraft crashed near Wotton Underward.
Born 1922 in Dunbar. Also registered at Colinton in Edinburgh. Son of Gavin Struthers Buchan and Sarah Davidson (Burnside) Buchan of Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 27 October 1943 and buried in Colinton Parish Churchyard, Southern Extension, Edinburgh. (CWG)


MATTHEW T. LOW
Matthew Thomas Low – age 21 – Signalman (W/2073) Royal Canadian Corps of Signals attached to H.Q. 3rd Canadian Infantry Brigade.
Matthew died near Osierschens in Germany and was re-interred in March 1946.
Born 1925 in Haddington as Carr Matthew Low. Son of Carr James Low and Elizabeth Gillies (Bain) Low of Jedburgh, Roxburghshire who had married in 1922 in Stenton.
Died on Service on 15 July 1945 and buried in Holten Canadian War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the nearby Whitekirk & Tyninghame Parish War Memorial.


TAYLOR H. SCAMBLER
Taylor Henry Scambler – age 24 – Staff Sergeant (2002507) Royal Engineers.
Taylor was a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was a Clerk of Works in Glasgow. He was lost in action at sea but I cannot identify the circumstances.
Born 1917 in Dunbar, East Lothian. Son of William and Jessie Davidson (Cessford) Scambler of Spott Lake Cottage. Husband of Mary Gordon (Ferguson) Scambler of Hamilton, Lanarkshire who he married in 1940 in Hamilton.
Lost at Sea on 17 January 1941 and named on the Brookwood 1939-1945 Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the adjacent Spott Parish War Memorial and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.
