This plaque, affixed in All Saints Parish Church High Wycombe is in memory of Captain Edward Coverley Kennedy, who was commanding HMS Rawalpindi on 23 November 1939 when that ship was sunk by German warships Deutschland, Gneisenau and Scharnhorst. The position of the enemy was relayed to the Royal Navy before the Rawalpindi went down.
There were 12 crewmembers on the Rawalpindi who hailed from the Isle of Lewis, eight of whom perished when she went down. The four others were taken POW - hence the relevance to this forum.
The Rawalpindi's sacrifice was acknowledged by the German navy, but is held to be underrated by the British authorities at the time.
