Details of Flight Sgt George Thompson's Victoria Cross:
THOMPSON George
Flight Sergeant 9 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve..
London Gazetted on 20th February 1945
VC Medal's Custodian is the National War Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle..
Born on 23rd October 1920 at Trinity Gask, Perthshire, Scotland.
Died on 23rd January 1945 in Belgium. (Died on of wounds).
Memorial on grave at Brussels Town Cemetery, Evere-les-Bruxelles, Belgium.
Citation reads.
On 1 January 1945 in an attack on the Dortmund-Ems Canal, a Lancaster bomber, after releasing its bombs, was hit by two shells and raging fire broke out. Flight Sergeant Thompson, wireless operator, seeing that both turrets were ablaze, went at once to help the two gunners to a place of relative safety, extinguishing their burning clothing with his bare hands. Then, despite his shocking state of burns and charred clothing, he went through the burning fuselage to report to the pilot. The crippled aircraft finally crash-landed, one of the gunners survived, the other Died on. Flight Sergt Thompson Died on of his injuries three weeks later. |

TANJONG PINANG (Palm Oil Tanker) 133 Tons 13 Feb
Diesel Engined -1 x 3" and 1 x 40mm Bofors (Lt Cdr Basil Shaw N.Z.R.N.R.)
Sailed ex Singapore Evening 13.2.42, passengers included R.A.O.C. personnel (1 Major and 50 ORs). Picked up some survivors of Shu Kwang 14.2.42 and made Tembilan - then returned to Pom Pong Island to pick up more stranded evacuees (one says 120, another "about 320"). Sailing on the 16th for Batavia (unknown to them already captured) they were illuminated by Searchlights and then attacked by shell fire fron Japanese Naval Units, taking two direct hits, one exploding in a cabin holding many nurses, killing about 20 people. The vessel sank within 5 minutes, and a another shell explosion shattered a lifeboat, the occupants being thrown into the sea., This on the night of the 18th February. Of 11 surviivors (who managed to secure 4 small rafts together, but only 5 survived at the end of the 5th day when 2 of the remaining 5 struck out with one of the rafts
One was to be picked up by a Japanese Cruiser - doubtful of any other survivors. |

Nursing sister Keir's CWGC entry has already been listed above by Mark but it's not mentioned on the previous post that she was a nurse and may have served in the Malayan Nursing Service. She is listed as such on this website:

And is one of several Scottish women listed as serving with the MNS who died on the SS 'Tanjong Pinang'
