LIEUTENANT WALTER HOWDEN LYELL, A.M, of the Gordon Highlanders

He in fact died shortly after the end of the Great War overseas of illness.

Lieutenant Walter Howden Lyell , A.M was the 5th son of Alex Lyell J.P. of Gardyne Castle , Guthrie , Forfarshire ( Born 16 Jan 1898) . He attended Montrose Academy and then Haileybury College in England .

He was commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders as 2nd Lieutenant and whilst in France a bomb ( Grenade) went astray and he saved the lives of his men to which he was awarded the ALBERT MEDAL for his bravery.

He served either on attachment or on transfer with the 18 Sqn RFC/RAF and during the summer months of 1918 I recall he was seriously wounded in action in the air ( shot in the eye ) when flying as an Observer in DH4 ( daytime Bomber). He was later discharged from the 18 Sqn RAF that year and it would appear that he went off to work in Rangoon and on the 28 April 1923 he died there of BLACK WATER FEVER .

Other Observers flying alongside Lieut Walter H Lyell AM in 18 Sqn RFC & RAF in France during the 1918 period were Arbroath born Lieut Patrick Wright Anderson , 8 Black Watch , 10 Black Watch, & 18 Sqn RFC & RAF and Dundee born Capt Lewis I Collins MC , Yorkshire Reg and 18 Sqn RFC & RAF . Lt P W Anderson died at Arbroath in 1921 of his serious wounds received in action as observer in DH4 on 27 June 1918 and Capt L I Collins MC served in the Black Watch as a Lieutenant in 1939 -19 45 war .

During the 1960's possibly Gardyne Castle at Guthrie owned by the Lyells for many centuries was sold to the Don family and then sold again since . As a wee boy in Arbroath I remember a Mr Lyell coming to the kirk in the town from Gardyne Castle so he would have been one of Lieut Walter H Lyell's brothers .............
