Torrance - Strathkelvin District
The Torrance war memorial is a grey granit obelisk in a landscaped area which stands by the side of Balgrochan Road in the middle of the village.
The monument was erected by Glasgow monumental masons Messrs. Scott Rae, their Daybook entry reads:
'Order No. 5825, Torrance, Creetown Obelisk, Erected August 1921, Daybook 355'.

"Private J.T. Johnston, of the Liverpool Scottish Regiment, was killed on June 16. He was 35 years of age, and belonged to Torrance. Private Johnston, who was employed in Liverpool, served in the South African War."

Additional Information:Daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Frame Carlyle, of Bishopbriggs, Glasgow.

HMS Assegai was the naval shore base at Durban, South Africa.

On 5 February 1944 the troopship "Khedive Ismail" left Mombasa bound for Colombo carrying 1,324 passengers including 996 members of the East African Artillery's 301st Field Regiment, 271 Royal Navy personnel, 19 WRNS, 53 nursing sisters and their matron and nine members of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry.
She was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine I-27. Of 1,511 people aboard Khedive Ismail, only 208 men and 6 women survived the sinking and subsequent battle. 1,220 men and 77 women were killed - some by depth charges which eventually caused the sinking of the submarine. The sinking was the third largest loss of life from Allied shipping in World War II and the largest loss of servicewomen in the history of the Commonwealth of Nations.
