This aircraft had a total of 144 hours when lost. ND766 was one of two 7 Squadron Lancasters lost on this operation. See: ND590 Airborne 2356 23Jun44 from Oakington tasked to bomb the flying-bomb site at Coubronne. Four of the crew, including F/L Wakefield, are buried in Esquelbecq Military cemetery; Sgt Watson and Sgt Boulger are buried in Wormhout Communal Cemetery, while Sgt Boutell is buried at Ledringham Churchyard where he is the sole airman amongst 52 Service graves. The following man is mentioned on a gravestone in Lambhill Cemetery, Maryhill, Glasgow, but his name doesn't appear on the Terregles Memorial.

The inscription on the stone states that L.Cpl. Samuel Corson was the son of Samuel and Jeanie Corson and was killed in action at Loos, 25th September 1915 aged 18 years and 10 months.

I wonder if Samuel is related to all the Corsons listed on a very detailed stone in Castle Douglas cemetery http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=304&start=0&mforum=scottishwargraves it's not that common a name.

WILLIAM BANNISTER, MARYFIELD, SERGT. A.S.&.H.
William Bannister, Sergeant (S/6976) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 27.
William had served his apprenticeship at Terregles House and was a gardener at Larbert House in Stirlingshire when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 and served at Loos, the Somme and Arras. He was wounded at Martinpuich in September 1916 and evacuated to hospitals in Guildford and Eastbourne. He was posted to the 3rd Reserve Battalion in December and returned to France in August 1917.
Born 1890 at Maryfield, Terregles. Son of the late Elizabeth (Kelly) Bannister and of James Bannister of Bowhouses, Terregles. He named his sister Mary Bannister of the same address as his next-of-kin.
Missing in action 24 October 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

GEORGE BROWN, GARDENS, PTE. K.O.S.B.
The location "Gardens" refers to Terregles House Gardens and judging from the 1911 census there were 6 or more gardeners from all over the country working there. (for example John W Stewart, listed below, was from Dunkeld)

George Brown, Private (23440) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 31.
George was employed in the gardens of Terregles House when he enlisted in May 1916. He was wounded on 27 September 1916 and was evacuated to the 4th Northern General Hospital in Lincoln where he died.
Born 1885 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late David Brown of Carruthertown and Sarah (Pagan) Brown of Whitecroft Gate, Dalton, Dumfriesshire.
Died of wounds on 7 October 1916 and buried in Dalton Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Dalton Parish War Memorial and on the Roll of Honour in the Parish Church

Robert Bryden, Private (47184) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots. Age 19.
Robert was an apprentice blacksmith with his father when he enlisted in December 1916. He was mobilised in May 1917 an initially allocated to the 2nd (Home Service) Garrison Battalion but on 2 April 1918 he was posted to the 1/8th Royal Scots in France.
Born 1898 in Bowhouse, Terregles. Son of John and Mary (Miller) Bryden.
Killed in action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Marfaux British Cemetery, France.

Archibald Borland Cameron, Military Medal, Second Lieutenant: 8th Battalion, Border Regiment. Age 24.
Archie was employed as a clerk in the Corn Exchange, Dumfries when he enlisted as Private (16964) in the 6th King's Own Scottish Borderers. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915. He was wounded February 1916 and again in July when he had just been appointed Temp. Company Quartermaster Sergeant. He was awarded a M.M. as 16964 Corporal (Acting Sergeant) A. Cameron, K.0.Sco. Bord. and returned to France in October 1916. Archie was granted a commission in the Border Regiment in August 1917.
Born 1896 in Ochiltree, Ayrshire. Son of James and Annie (Jack) Cameron of Lincluden Mains Farm, Terregles.
Missing in action on 9 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

ROBERT CANNON, WOODLAND, PTE. GORDON HIGHRS.
Robert McQueen Cannon, Private (S/10955) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 17.
Robert had been educated at Barnbarroch School, Colvend, KIrkcudbrightshire and was a gardener at Woodland House, New Bridge, Dumfries when he enlisted in 1915. He was wounded on 7 October 1917 and died in the 26th General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1899 at Auchenhill, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Alexander and Maggie (McQueen) Cannon of Barnbarroch, Colvend.
Died of wounds on 10 October 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Colvend Parish War Memorial.

Thought to be:
John McClachrie, Private (362165) 808th Area Employment Company, Labour Corps. Age 29.
Formerly Private (4481) King's Own Scottish Borderers and Rifleman (201883) 19th (Garrison) Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Robert died of heart disease in the 76th Casualty Clearing Station at Ludd, Palestine.
Born 1890 at Market Street, Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire - as William John McClauchrie. Son of Robert and Agnes (Stott) McClauchrie.
Died on service on 30 November 1918 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named (as Clachrie) on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial in Dumfries.
Robert McLaughlan and Agnes Stott married in 1875 in Maxwelltown and they are listed under this name on the 1881 census. By 1891 the name is McLachrie and by 1901 it is Clauchrie. In 1911 Robert, Agnes and John William Clauchrie are at Braecroft, Terregles.

ROBERT HALLIDAY, WOODLAND, MOTOR AMBL. DRIVER.
Technically Robert was a civilian so not qualified for inclusion on the CWGC Register.
Robert Dickson Halliday, Motor Ambulance Driver, British Red Cross. Age 26.
Born 1890 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert Dickson Halliday and of Mary (Anderson) Halliday of Dunscore. Husband of Henrietta or "Fannie" (Thomas) Halliday of Woodland, Terregles who he married in 1913. Robert was a chauffeur at Woodland, Newbridge, Terregles when he joined the Red Cross at the outbreak of war. He was based at Rouen Hospital driving the wounded from Field to Base Hospitals. The Red Cross were the first to use motorised ambulances for this work. Robert became ill with TB and was evacuated to Bridge of Weir Sanatorium, Renfrewshire where he died.
Died on 30 June 1916 and buried in Dunscore Parish Churchyard.
Also named on the Dunscore War Memorial (incorrectly as serving with the Army Service Corps)

THOMAS McKIE, GALLOWHILL, CORPL. R.S.FUSILRS.
Thomas McKie, Lance Corporal (51306) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 20.
Thomas was a gamekeeper at Terregles House when he enlisted in January 1917 in the Royal Scots. He was posted to the RSF in France in December 1917 and served at St. Quentin.
Born 1898 at Gallowhill, Terregles. Son of John and Martha (Sinclair) McKie. Killed in action on 18 August 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.

James McWilliam, Corporal (6172 & 332903) 1/9th Battalion (Glasgow Highanders) Highland Light Infantry. Age 25.
James was working on his father's farm when he enlisted as Private (1405) in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in March 1916. He was posted to the 1/9th HLI in France and was wounded at Arras. James was killed by a sniper near Bailleul.
Born 1892 in Terregles. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Kennedy) McWilliam of Kirkland, Terregles.
Missing in action on 16 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

Robert Kennedy McWilliam, Private (235091) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 24.
Robert also was working on his father's farm when he enlisted as Private (2577) in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in August 1916. He was posted to the 9th Cameronians in France and was wounded at St. Julien. He returned to France in March 1918 and was posted to the 1st Cameronians. Robert was wounded at Le Cateau on 25 October 1918 and died of his wounds in 1st Australian General Hospital in Rouen.
Born 1894 in Terregles. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Kennedy) McWilliam of Kirkland, Terregles.
Died of wounds on 9 November 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

Robert Austin Porteous, Private (201838) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20.
Robert worked at home on the farm when he enlisted in June 1916. He was reported to be wounded and missing at Gaza.
Born 1897 in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Janet Hutton (Austin) Porteous of Braecroft, Terregles.
Missing in action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the War Memorials in Eaglesfield and Middlebie.

JAMES S. ROBERTSON, BOWHOUSE, PTE. R.SCOTS.
James Stewart Robertson, Private (58943) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots. Age 18.
James was an apprentice gardener at Terregles House when he enlisted as Private (2/13578) in the 55th Training Reserve in March 1917. He was posted as Private (53257) in the Highland Light Infantry in December, went to France in March 1918 and was posted to the 1/9th Royal Scots. He was wounded at Merville and reportedly died of wounds but military records show him as Missing in Action.
Born 1899 in Bowhouse, Terregles. Son of John and Alice (Newby) Robertson.
Missing in action on 13 April 1918 and listed on the Ploegseert Memorial, Belgium.

JOHN W. STEWART, GARDENS, CORPL. IN. FUSILIERS.
John William Stewart, Lance Corporal (30967) 6th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Age 34.
John had served his apprenticeship in Dunkeld, Perthshire and was Foreman Gardener at Terregles House when he enlisted as Private (2332) in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Born 1884 at Spoutswells, Dunkeld, Perthshire. Son of Alexander and Janet (Stewart) Stewart. Husband of Mary (MacLean) of Underwood House near Kilmarnock who he married as Corporal (2332) Lanarkshire Yeomanry in Jordanhill, Glasgow in February 1916.
Missing in action on 26 March 1918 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Dunkeld War Memorial.
The 10th (Irish) Division fought throughout the Palestine Campaign and participated in the capture of Jerusalem in December 1917. In the spring of 1918 they were involved in operations against the Turkish Army in the Jordan Valley.

JOHN A. BRYDSON, PILOT OFFICER R.A.F.V.R.
John Alexander Brydson, Pilot Officer/Pilot (196890) 66 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 23.
John was a joiner in his grandfather's business when he enlisted in 1941 and was promoted to Sergeant Pilot (1343649). He was commissioned in March 1945. He was shot down while supporting an infantry advance near Arnhem.
Born 1921 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William Alexander and Annie (Hamilton) Brydson of Terregles.
Killed in action on 1 April 1945 and buried in Rheden (Velp) Protestant Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the RAF Association Memorial in Dumfries.
In April 1945, 66 Squadron were flying Spitfires from RAF Schijndel and RAF Twente in southern Netherlands as part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force.

WILLIAM McL. DICKSON, PTE. CAMERONIANS (S.R.)
William McLauchlan Dickson, Rifleman (3254497) 6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 23.
Born 1921 in Dumfies. Son of Robert and Elizabeth (McLachlan) Dickson of 1 Hardthorn Road, Terregles.
Killed in action on 26 October 1944 and buried in Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery, Netherlands.
The 6th Scottish Rifles, as part of the 52nd (Lowland) Division, were attached to the Canadian 2nd Infantry Division during the Battle of the Scheldt.

ALEXANDER McNEISH, DRIVER, R.A.S.C.
Alexander Fraser Taylor McNeish, Driver (T/14780583) Royal Army Service Corps. Age 34.
Born 1910 in Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire. Son of Margaret Jane (Taylor) McNeish and step-son of George Little McNeish. Husband of Margaret (Polland) McNeish who he married in 1940 in Kirkmichael.
Died on active service on 20 May 1945 and buried in Fayid War Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Kirkmichael War Memorial.
