Morham, East Lothian, sometimes spelt Moram, Morum, Morhame, etc., in old records, is the smallest (agricultural) parish in Scotland, sandwiched between five other parishes: Haddington, Garvald, Yester, Whittingehame, and Prestonkirk, in the undulating lower reaches of the Lammermuir Hills.

ALEX ANDERSON, CPL. GORDON HRS.
Alexander Anderson – age 18 – Private (1393) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Alexander joined his battalion as a Corporal in April 1915.
Born 1897 in Edinburgh as Alexander Turner Anderson. Son of David and Elizabeth (Turner) Anderson of Nungate, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 17 June 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

DAVID ANDERSON, SGT. GORDON HRS.
David Anderson – age 24 – Sergeant (382) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
In 1911 David, age 19, was serving with the Gordons in Colchester, Essex. The battalion returned to England from Cairo and landed at Zeebrugge in October 1914.
Born 1892 in Edinburgh. Son of David and Elizabeth (Turner) Anderson of Nungate, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 20 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

PATRICK COURTNEY, PTE. R. DEFENCE Cps.
Patrick Courtney – age 52 – Private (9125) 204th Protection Company, Royal Defence Corps.
Patrick was a farm servant when he enlisted as Private (20011) in the Royal Scots. Protection Companies took over the duties of the Supernumerary Territorial Force Companies and came into existence in April 1916. Patrick died of chronic bronchitis in the Military Hospital, at Craigleith, Edinburgh. Born 1866 in Mohill, County Leitrim, Ireland. Son of the late Michael (died 1906) and Bridget (Gilchrist) Courtney (died 1915) of Mohill. Husband of Mary (Reynolds) Courtney of Blackmains and of Amisfield Mains, Haddington who he married in 1897 in Haddington.
Died on Service on 6 March 1917 and buried in Haddington Roman Catholic Graveyard. (CWG)

SYDNEY MACDONALD, LT. THE ROYAL SCOTS
Sydney Macdonald – age 31 – Lieutenant, 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Sydney was educated at Glasgow Academy and by 1911, aged 25, he was farming at Northrig, Morham. He was commissioned in the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots in June 1915 and was promoted in July 1917. He joined the 1/4th Royal Scots in France in April 1918.
Born 1886 in Helensburgh, Rhu, Dunbartonshire. Son of James Macdonald and Eliza Isabella (Campbell) Macdonald, of Invergate, Rhu. Husband of Mary Allan (Macewen) Macdonald of 9 Royal Terrace, Glasgow, of 5 Gillsland Road, Edinburgh and of Garrochty Farm, Kingarth, Bute who he married in 1911 in Hillhead, Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 2 September 1918 and buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France.
Also named on an individual memorial in Morham Parish Church, on the Kingarth and Rhu War Memorials and on the Glasgow Academy memorial.

ANDREW PAXTON, PTE. THE ROYAL SCOTS
Andrew Crawford Paxton – age 30 – Private (30405) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Andrew was a painter living at 44 Mill Hill, Musselburgh when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised as Private (3099) in the 3/7th Royal Scots in March 1916 and joined the 2nd battalion in France in August but he was killed two weeks later.
Born 1886 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Andrew and Margaret (Crawford) Paxton of Woodend Cottage, Colstoun, Haddington and of Eaglescairnie, Bolton, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 16 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

DUNCAN SCOTT, PTE. THE ROYAL SCOTS
Duncan Scott – age 27 – Private (325447) 8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Duncan was a farm servant at Morham Mains when he enlisted as Private (1606) in the 8th Royal Scots in December 1914. He joined the 1/8th Battalion in France in April 1915 but he was evacuated home with a knee injury in December 1916. He was posted to the 1st Royal Scots in Salonica in northern Greece in November 1917 where he suffered two bouts of malaria. In January 1919 he moved with the battalion to Southern Russia where in March he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and evacuated to the Bermondsey Military Hospital in London. Duncan was discharged from the army in July 1919 and awarded a Silver War Badge (B/274671) but he died at home in the following year.
Born 1892 in Saltoun, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Catherine (Mcdonald) Scott (died 1909) and of James Scott. Husband of Mary Main Urquhart (Reid) Scott of East Craig and of 22, Glenburn Road, North Berwick who he married in May 1917 in North Berwick.
Died on 15 January 1920 and buried in North Berwick Cemetery. (CWG)
