Danderhall & Newton Parish War Memorial
Location: Near Church, Newton Church Road, between Danderhall and Newton
OS Ref:NT 314 693
Not listed on UKNIWM

A new memorial dating from 1997 and raised by the local Community council by the looks of it. The paint in the inscriptions is starting to weather quite badly. Hopefully it will be touched up soon.

There is one casualty for Cyprus 1958. Tpr P Livingstone of the Royal Horse Guards is not listed on the SNWM database.

Note also the two Gordon Highlanders added to the Second World War list but at different times

One of the later additions

Name: CHARLES, THOMAS HAYWARD
Initials: T H
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Age: 28
Date of Death: 21/09/1944
Service No: 2876549
Additional information: Son of William Montague Charles and Edith Vale Charles.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Column 78.
Memorial: SINGAPORE MEMORIAL

The SNWM has him enlisting in Edinburgh and dying at sea. Looking at the internet Pte Charles died as a prisoner of war of the Japanese when the ship he was travelling to Japan in, the Hofuku Maru was sunk by the Americans. 1047 Allied P-o-Ws were lost.

See here http://www.roll-of-honour.org.uk/Hell_Ships/Hofuku_Maru/ for all the British PoWs lost that day.

It also looks like there is a Norwegian Naval Airman listed as well.
Lt G.A.Q. Krijnen of the Royal Norwegian Navy Air Service (Marinens Flyvevesen).

Lt Krijnen must have died before 10 November 1944. That was the date when The Royal Norwegian Navy Air Service became the Royal Norwegian Air Force.

Here's another theatre for a Perthshire man

Surname HUTCHINSON
Firstname Peter B
Service number 2191302
Date of death 21/09/1944
Decoration
Place of birth Perthshire
Other Royal Army Ordnance Corps
SNWM roll SCOTSMEN IN VARIOUS UNITS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death Netherlands East Indies

The Hofuku Maru website has his spouse, Lily Hutchison, living in Springfield, Fife.

SNWM has 154 entries for 21st September 1944 for all theatres. Probably most of the Gordons and Argylls listed for that date were from the 2nd Bns of the regiments and went down with this ship.

According to the same website Three 'Hell Ships' were sunk within two weeks killing thousands of PoWs. I'm sure quite a few are listed on the memorials we've been posting.

Hofuku Maru - Sunk 21st September 1944 by planes from U.S. Aircraft Carrier

Junyo Maru - Sunk 18th September 1944 by HMS TRADEWIND

Kachidoki Maru - Sunk 12th September 1944 by USS Pampanito
