|

Slightly off topic but I wondered if any member might be aware of a forum like this for U.S. memorials. I live in a small town in the NE U.S. with a population of 3,500 and every day I drive by a modest monument to those who have fallen. I thought perhaps I should take a picture of it and see if it can be added to a database.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
This is a great site, I feel a bit guilty not being able to contribute but the Atlantic has proven to be a bit of an obstacle

With a name like Murray you are surely welcome. Why don't you start one for your State?

I was thinking of posting something on the Great War Discussion Forum about someone following David's lead and starting a Welsh or Irish or English equivalent. This forum has been very succesful and I would be very interested in seeing memorials from other parts of the UK. In fact there is no reason why this format can't be copied anywhere in the world where communities have erected war memorials. Scotland can't be unique in having war memorial spotters and I'm sure other forums would be just as popular as this one.

Good idea, there are a lot of people working away, trying to do their best but the job is too big for one person and the forum is a great way to get everyone to contribute whatever they are able to, towards a common goal.

I posted a message on the GWDF this evening about this. See here
If nothing else happens it was a chance to plug this forum again.
We'll see what happens...

I think that we are fortunate in this country for it to be large enough to have a wide diversity of different memorials, styles etc but Scotland is small enough that we can nearly get all of it covered comprehensively.
And we seem to have more than our fair share of memorial spotters.
The Welsh should be able to do similar but England is too diverse I'd suggest.
And as for Ireland - possibly their history goes against them in this especially in the south. Ulster should be easier to do and I'm sure there are enough willing volunteers there. _________________

I see spoons has already posted a link for Ireland;
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=768
I remember seeing the Great War Memorial at Cahir, Co Tipperary a couple of years back which really struck me. Most Id seen, and there are many, were for those of the Irish Volunteer Brigades etc.
I'm now a 'spotter' - and heres me thinking I was a local historian!
I'm awa for a lie doon |

It was more Ulster I was thinking of for Ireland but there are some WMs in Ireland and a war memorial forum doesn't just have to cover Great War Imperial memorials. No good reason therefore to split it.
Places like Wales and New Zealand are also prime candidates for similar forums. As you say England would probably be too big for one forum but broken down into regions it might work. The same would apply for Australia, Canada and the US.
I'm sure they'd all get a similar response to our forum from genealogists, local historians and anoraks

Thanks Gents for some thoughtful comments. I might sniff around a bit over here and see if there are other towns that have memorials. It might be that the one in my town is more of an exception. There are lots of civil war memorials but I haven't noticed as many first war memorials.

Jim
Not the slightest bit of interest has been shown on the other forum for clones of this one.
Derek posted a couple of times to try and keep it in the public eye but to no avail.
As I've just posted on the other forum an interest in war memorials must be a peculiarly Scottish trait. (obviously applying to folk overseas with Scottish ancestors as well!)
Cheers

And those of us without a Scots bloodline but have chosen to live here
I think Martin Edwards' roll-of-honour website is worth a mention as an exception but it has the disadvantage that it needs a massive effort from one man to make all the updates, even if he does have volunteers for the research. |

It must be contagious then!

Spot on Spoons. Roll-of-Honour is a very good website. However a website means a massive commitment for one person. The beauty of a forum means anyone can add their information at any time and then others can add extra information without a third party being involved.
