This memorial is not listed on UKNIWM

At the main road junction in Thornhill (Market Cross) take the side road towards the police station and the memorial is about 50 yards on the left.
OS Map Ref: NX 879 955

An unusual memorial, and don't miss the entry for Korea on the front.

Quite distinctive.
I like the way they have added names for WW2 in 'bookform'.
Is that Laurel leaves behind the book?, part of the original memorial?

The book is bronze, leaning on a carved stone rest (lectern?) and the laurel leaves are carved in stone and form part of it.

I do like this memorial. the bronze book is very unusual. Was there any symbolism to the memorial before the book was added?

Korean Casualty

From http://www.communigate.co.uk/ne/bkva/page3.phtml

Corporal W.D. POSSEE 30 1 Glosters 26 April 1951

He is not listed on the SNWM. I take it 30 refers to his age.

And the link to the recently posted Korean War website page for Cpl Possee:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/bkvaroh/ROH/FilesCM/0266.htm

26th April must make him one of the Glorious Glosters. Between 22nd and 25th April they held their position on the Imjin River.

For more information see here

A nice place in Morton to have a take-away pizza by the looks of it as well.

about the pizza box - what can I say Embarassed - only noticed it on the photo afterwards, still..........I like to see a memorial that is used (with respect) and it certainly wasn't covered in cig ends and beer cans.

I see what you mean about any earlier symbolism, if you take away the WW2 memorials then it would look like there was something missing so it seems reasonable to assume that there was something there earlier, but I have not information, sorry.

Spoons

You are right, it was a cheap shot. The memorial looks very well looked after.

I also notice that Pte James Beattie RSF was added to the Great War names at a later date.

Regards

no offence taken, I am no photographer so appreciate any comments and have changed what and how I photograph based on what people want and comment on. There is a WW1 nurse on this memorial, don't see too many of those either.

Just remembered that Helen Hastings (listed on the memorial) is buried in Morton cemetery and I have a photo of her gravestone.
