UKNIWM Ref: 44429

OS Map Ref: NX 635 779

Maj Stuart also has an individual memorial in Parton Parish church.

This memorial takes the form of a pair of stained glass windows with the inscription running across the base of both. I scratched my head about how to post these so that the inscription made sense and I hope this works (cropped images, side by side).

That is a very nice pair of windows, I like them very much. Interesting to know why they were done in that particular style. The appearance seems very 'English' to me.

Strangely, I cannot find him on any local civic memorial. I tried Parton and New Galloway to tie in with the church memorials, Balmaclellan where his wife lived,Crossmichael and St John's Town of Dalry which are both nearby. The 2 small windows instead of a larger one is the requirement of the architecture of the church. I cannot comment on the style because I have not seen enough Scottish windows to comment, but certainly I can imagine them in an English village church.

What also drew my attention here was the link to Carrick-on-Suir - a lovely place I visited only last summer.
Doing a bit of googling reveals that the Villiers-Stuarts are one of Ireland's (Co. Waterford) most noted families.
The PRONI holds much papers on them and a link to a desription is here;

The two figures on the left are dressed in mid-17th Century clothes. Is this a reference to something in the family history from the time of the Civil Wars in Scotland, England and Ireland?

Regards

I should have mentioned, this memorial is in St Margaret's Episcopal Church.

Here is a picture of the church:

The scenes in the window are from the Pilgrim's Progress.

Window was made by James Powell.
