It's an interesting memorial in that it lists the men of Ballachulish who died and those from neighbouring Glencoe - Glencoe having its own memorial.Here _________________ Time but th' impression stronger makes, As streams their channels deeper wear. Ballachulish & Glencoe - Lochaber District UKNIWM Ref no. 5893 The Ballachulish and Glencoe WWI memorial features the grey granite sculpture of a highland infantryman set on top of a tall square pedestal of rustic grey granite blocks. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed on a dressed grey granite tablet set into the face of the pedestal. As far as I know the memorial only lists the dead of WWI as I don't have any record or photograph of a WWII panel. Maybe someone can correct or confirm this? The monument stands in a raised enclosure which is fronted by a wall and approached by stairs, beside road between village and bridge. The memorial was by Stewart & Co. of Aberdeen and bears a striking resemblance to other Stewart & Co. sculptures at Tarland and Tough, both of which were almost certainly carved by Aberdeen granite mason Robert Warrack Morrison, so there is some possibility that this is another of Morrison's works. Back to top Keptie Joined: 24 Feb 2009 Posts: 924 Location: near Arbroath Angus Posted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 7:39 pm    Post subject: Ballachulish & Glencoe On a visit to Ballachulish this week and there a booklet on the area but showing pics of the memorial : Page 46 ) The Ballachulish & Glencoe war memorial was UNVEILED on 4th August 1923 by Lt Col IAN CAMPBELL of AIRDS, commanding Officer of the 8th Bn ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS . He can be seen giving his speech . The ceremony began with a GUARD of TERRITORIAL ARMY soldiers , girl guides, and ex servicemen taking their places to the sound of the Pipes playing FLOWER O' THE FOREST .
