I have a feeling the plaque inside the hall may have come from the old Cargill Parish Church but, as yet, have found no reference to substantiate this. More newspaper trawling.

PERTHSHIRE CONSTITUTIONAL & JOURNAL: 23.08.1920
BURRELTON WAR MEMORIAL
THE EAST END'S SCHEME

At a public meeting in the Public Hall, Burrelton, Mr Henderson of Lawton presiding, it was reported that the War Memorial Committee in the east and west ends of the parish could not come to an agreement about a suitable site, hence the delay. The west end would not support a scheme to erect a memorial at or near Burrelton, but agreed to support a scheme or erecting a tablet on the Churches of Cargill, Woodside, and Wofhill, with all the names of the fallen belonging to the parish.
After a full discussion it was unanimously agreed by the east end to erect a memorial cross on Burrelton Green, with tablets containing all names of those belonging to the parish who had fallen in the war.
A committee was appointed to consult Mr L. Reid, builder, Coupar Angus, as to a suitable design and the probable cost, and collectors were appointed to receive subscriptions.

PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 10.04.1929
WAYSIDE ECHOES
WOLFHILL MEMORIAL

I am informed that a suitable tablet, designed and cut by Mr George Christie, sculptor, York Place, has been cut into the wall of the hall gifted by Sir Ernest Moon of Balholmie to the village of Wolfhill as a war memorial to the men of the village and district who fell in the war, and in memory of his son, Lieut. Basil Moon, who was killed in action. On the tablet are inscribed the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice.

Due to a dwindling committee I am informed that the future of the Wolfhill Hall is under threat. An EGM is imminent.

BLAIRGOWRIE ADVERTISER: 05.06.1915
MR MOON OF BALHOLMIE'S YOUNGER SON KILLED -
MEMORIAL SERVICE AT CARGILL

Second Lieutenant Basil Moon, who was killed in action on 24th inst., was the younger son of Mr Ernest Moon, K.C., of Balholmie, Cargill, Counsel to the Speaker of the House of Commons, and Mrs Moon. He was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford. When war was declared he applied for a commission; and was gazetted to the Post Office Rifles. His regiment went to France in March.
On Sunday a memorial service was conducted in Cargill Parish Church by Rev. W. A. Campbell. Preaching on John xiv., 1 "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me", Mr Campbell said:- "Our trouble today is the loss of one who worshipped here regularly, preferring the service of the Church of Scotland to that of the Church of England. Enlisting on the outbreak of war, he was on Monday last struck in battle, while leading his men in a most difficult and dangerous charge. He did not live for himself; and the end of his life was action, and successful action, for the sake of others. For the sake of others he voluntarily sacrificed himself. Without such self-sacrifice war would be but carnage. With it, war, in spite of its terrible features, displays a solemn morality. The brave young officer, having fought well, will sleep well, even though the storm of war should rage over his grave. When one who encounters death for the sake of others is called away, it may be like the stoic to remain unmoved; but it is not like the Christian. God intends that his Gift should be received with smiles of gratitude and surrendered with tears of grief. Our sorrow must flow in the channels of submission. It must be a sorrow so quiet as to hear the words of consolation that are uttererd amongst the stokes of the rod - 'Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me".
'The Dead March in Saul' was played at the close of service.

Earlier this year Mike Taylor of the WFA gave a talk on Basil Moon in the newly refurbished Wolfhill Hall-which is no longer under threat.
At the very well attended meeting Mike was handed Basil Moon`s death penny which had been found at a Council tip!
As can be seen from the pictures(posted shortly) the family engraved the penny with additional details.
Basil`s great niece was in the audience and the penny has now been given back to her for family safekeeping.
A happy ending indeed.

A nice story, thanks.
