This Memorial to the casualties of the Congregation is in the St Mary's & St Peter's Scottish Episcopal Church in Montrose .

The church has a WW1 & WW2 memorial for the congregation casualties and others erected by family members of the congregation including one to Lt Alexander Renny - Tailyour , Black Watch killed in action Korea (1952)

She is listed on the Montrose burgh memorial and her gravestone (see alsoSWGP here)with RRC after her name. She was awarded the Royal Red Cross medal but it is not listed on her CWGC entry.

We don't usually show the graves but in this instance I think the inscription justifies it. According to the stone she died from the effects of the sinking of HM Hospital Ship 'Brittanic' off Greece in November 1916 - three and a half years earlier. She has a CWGC entry so her death must have been attributed to her war service

Sister Rebecca McMurray Munro is shown as being awarded the R.R.C., 2nd Class by the War Office announcement of 3rd June 1916. As a 2nd Class holder the letters after her name should be A.R.R.C. I cannot find reference to a second R.R.C. award.

The cause of her death was not injury related, she died of TB (Lungs). The illness may well have related to her war service but will not have been " caused by the sinking of HMHS Britannic " as the headstone indicates.

RMS Britannic was a sister ship of the ill fated White Star liners Titanic and Olympic.

Sister Munro's service file further confirms the sinking of HMHS Britannic had no bearing on her death in 1920 and also demonstrates that details on private headstones cannot always be relied upon as fact. The file has no mention of the sinking or her being affected by it.

Her record confirms, having contracted TB whilst in military service, she was discharged unfit from QAIMNSR following a medical board which recommended she be admitted to a Sanatorium. She was admitted to Noranside on 15th March 1917 and her service oficially ended on 6th April 1917.
At a later date she must have been moved to the Grampian Sanatorium, Kingussie where she died.

She was born at Montrose on Nov 20th 1887 and trained and worked at The City of Westminster Royal Infirmary between 1911 and April 1915 when she joind the Army nursing service. She transfered to HMHS Britannic in September 1916, two months before the vessel was sunk. The file confirms she made several voyages, during which, she was involved in nursing Tubercular patients.
