Ashkirk War Memorial.
A bronze metal plaque on inside wall of Ashkirk church.
Commemorates 12 men of the parish who fell in the Great War and is very interesting in that it lists the country and full date of death of each individual.

Although not on the memorial, he's from the town. He's also not listed on the Selkirk or Bonhill memorials.
Pte. James Dickson
(Glasgow Herald 23rd April 1915)
"Information has been received by Mrs Hall, Smollett Street, Alexandria, of the death at the front of her brother, Private James Dickson, 2nd Battalion Scots Guards. Private Dickson was a native of Ashkirk, near Selkirk, where he was born 33 years ago. He joined the Scots Guards when he was about 21, and he served with the regiment for a number of years, afterwards joining the Reserve. For some time he was employed in Edinburgh as a gardener, and three years ago he went to Canada. On the outbreak of war he was called up, and in August last year he arrived in this country and was despatched to the front. His death occurred in hospital on March 29. A companion in the trenches writes-"Private Dickson was wounded that day while digging in the trenches. I can assure you that Jim was one of the most highly respected men in the Battalion, and all join in sympathy in his sad loss." Private Dickson, whose wife is in Canada, had a brother in the Royal Scots, who is now at the front."

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He covered a working party with his bombers under very heavy trench mortar and bomb fire, moving fearlessly about giving encouragement. When his relief arrived after five hours, he voluntarily remained behind to help."
