This memorial is for the men of Southwick and is situated at a T junction in the hamlet of Caulkerbush.

OS Ref: NX 927 572

It is not listed on UKNIWM

There are 2 main shots because I like them both and couldn't decide which to exclude.

Sgt. Mgr. G.W. KENNEDY, DCM MM
George William Kennedy, Company Sergeant Major (418239) 42nd Battalion, (Royal Highlanders) Quebec Regiment, Canadian Infantry. Age 35.
Born 1882 at Dumfries. Son of George and Mary Ann Kennedy of Auchenskeoch, Southwick. Enlisted March 1915 at Montreal. Awarded Miltary Medal and promoted Sergeant Major in January 1917 and awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal in March 1917. Killed in Action 16 November 1917, buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.


Pte. A.S. CAMERON, MM
Andrew Stewart Cameron, Private (72193) 44th Company, Machine Gun Corps. Age 22.
Born 1895 at Millbank, Southwick. Son of James and Elizabeth Cameron of Millbank, Southwick. Enlisted January 1916 8th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders before transferring to MGC attached to 7th Cameron Highlanders. Awarded Military Medal September 1917. Killed in Action 2 March 1918, buried at Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, Arras, France.


Pte. A.Ed. DAVIDSON
Adam Edward Davidson, Private (40281) 1/4th Battalion, Royal Scots (Queen's Own Edinburgh Rifles). Age 33.
Born 1884 at Lower Glensome, Southwick. Son of Adam and Marion Davidson of Bogfoot, Southwick. Enlisted June 1916 3rd Battalion, KOSB before transferring to Royal Scots. Died of wounds 6 November 1917, buried at Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.

James Nicholson, Private (17397) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 33.
Born 1882 at Closeburn, Dumfries. Son of William and Sarah Nicholson of Loaningfoot, Preston Mill; husband of Barbara Ferguson Nicholson of Port Severn, Ontario. Enlisted January 1915 KOSB. Killed in Action 30 April 1915, buried at Divisional Collecting Post Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.


Pte. JNO. NICHOLSON
John Nicholson, Private (219309) 1/7th battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 26.
Born 1890 at Kirkbean. Son of James Nicholson of Mainsriddle, Southwick. Enlisted 5 August 1914 3/5th Battalion, KOSB before transferring to 1/7th Gordons (Lewis Gun Section). Died 27 March 1917 of "lung trouble as the result of service in the trenches", buried at Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, Arras, France.


Cpl. JAS. THOMSON
James Thomson, Corporal (2262) 16th Battalion, Australian Infantry, AIF. Age 31.
Born 1885 at Shawhead, New Abbey. Son of James and Elizabeth Thomson of Knockenhooly, Southwick. Enlisted March 1915 at Perth, Western Australia. Wounded at Gallipoli and again in France in August 1916. Accidentally killed 9 January 1917 when a building collapsed on him, buried at Dartmouth Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, Albert, France.

Robert Thomson, Private (40294) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots. Age 34.
Born 1882 at Shawhead, New Abbey. Son of James and Elizabeth Thomson of Knockenhooly, Southwick; husband of Jessie Scott Thomson of Kirkland, Irongrey. Enlisted June 1916. Killed in Action 21 October 1916, buried at Bazentin-le-Petit Military Cemetery, Somme, France.

2 Brothers:
Cpl. H SEGGIE and Pte. JAS SEGGIE
Hugh Seggie, Lance Corporal (S/21989) Born 1895. Age 21.
James Seggie, Private (S/21998) Born 1893. Age 23.
Both enlisted January 1916 in 6th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
Sons of Hugh and Mary Seggie of Bogknowe, Southwick.
Hugh reported missing in action 13 October 1916, James missing in action 7 September 1916, both are remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.


Pte. T WIGHT
George Thomas Wight, Private (16110) 6th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 17.
Born 1897 at Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Mary Wight formerly of Boreland Hill, Southwick. Enlisted December 1914. Died 14 February 1915 of scarlet fever at Aldershot, buried at Aldershot Military Cemetery.

William Chalmers, Private (13324) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. Age 19.
Born 1897 at Selby, Yorkshire. Son of Thomas and Rachel Chalmers formerly of Auchenskeoch, Southwick. Enlisted January 1915. Killed in Action 16 September 1916, buried at Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.


Pte. J C FRASER
James Crag Frazer, Private (3272) 1/10th Battalion, (Liverpool Scottish) The King's (Liverpool Regiment). Age 21.
Born at Glensome, Southwick. Son of T W and Jessie Frazer of Upper Parliament Street, Liverpool formerly of Glensome, Southwick.
Enlisted September 1914. Killed in Action 4 February 1915, buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also remembered on Dalbeattie War Memorial.


Gnr. T KIRKLAND
(one source gives his rank as Petty Officer Seaman Gunner)
Thomas Lindsay Kirkland, 1st Class Petty Officer (170934) Royal Naval Reserve. Age 38.
Born at Campbelltown, Argyllshire. Son of Daniel and Mary Kirkland of Upper Barnbarroch, Colvend. Enlisted June 1894 and served in China, Persian Gulf and Benin, West Africa. Joined HMS Hogue in July 1914 and was Lost at Sea 22 September 1914 when the Hogue was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea. Remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial and on the Colvend War Memorial.

James Ferrol McAdam, Private (2925) 1/5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Born 1894 at Kirkbean. Son of James and Mary McAdam of Tororrie, Kirkbean. Enlisted January 1915 2/5th KOSB and transferred to !/5th. Missing in Action 12 July 1915, remembered on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.


Pte. J McWHIRTER
John McWhirter, Private (11523) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19.
Born 1895 at Southwick. Son of Peter and Mary McWhirter of Friar Vennel, Dumfries formerly at Port Street, Dalbeattie. Enlisted December 1912 2nd KOSB Machine Gun Section. Missing in Action 2 June 1915, remembered on the Ypres(Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Pte. W McWHIRTER
William McWhirter, Private (9275) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 31.
Born 1883 at Tinwald, Dumfriesshire. Son of Peter and Mary McWhirter. Served in India and South Africa. Missing in Action 14 December 1914, remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium and on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.

On the 14 December 1914 the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders were ordered to attack a strongly wired position, up a hill and with mud a foot deep, at Maedelstede Farm. Of the 560 men who set off almost 260 were later listed as killed, wounded or missing.

William Shennan, Private (16179) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 24.
Born 1892 at Urr (Dalbeattie). Son of Robert Shennan of Tororrie, Preston Mill. Enlisted from Airdrie Farm September 1914. Missing in Action 14 July 1916, remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and on the Kirkbean War Memorial.


Pte. W STROYAN
William Stroyan, Private (9902) 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, Age 32.
Born 1882 at Southwick. Son of William and Mary Stroyan of Path Cottage, Blackcraig, Newton Stewart. Enlisted August 1914 having previously served 12 years including the South African Wars. Missing in Action 11 November 1914, remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium - and with two other brothers, Charles and John, on the Minnigaff War Memorial.

Lieut. J G BARTON
John Geoffry Barton, Lieutenant (323981) 9th Queen's Royal Lancers, Royal Armoured Corps. Age 21.
Born 1924 at Southwick. Son of Captain Phillip Geoffry Barton and Irene May Barton of Auchenskeoch, Southwick. Died 22 August 1945, buried at Dumfries Cemetery. (CWG)


Sgt. A BEATTIE
Alan Beattie, Sergeant (1824754) Royal Airforce Volunteer Reserve. Age 20.
Born 1924 at Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Margaret Beattie of Argrennan Mains. Killed in Action 27 April 1944 whilst serving as an Air Gunner in a Lancaster of 156 Squadron, RAF Bomber Command. The plane crashed near Achtmal on the Dutch/Belgian border during a raid on the Krupps works at Essen in the Ruhr. Buried in Zundert Protestant Churchyard, Holland.


Pte. G W McV GORDON
George William McVittie Gordon, Private (3189647) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Born 1920 at Kirkmichael, Dumfries. Son of Alexander and Jane Gordon of Troqueer, Dumfriesshire; husband of Rosemary. Died 4 July 1941 at Kirkton, Roxburgh as the result of a motorcycle accident, buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery. (CWG)


Pte. J K HUNTER
James Kirk Hunter, Private (3190517) 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, (1st Airlanding Brigade). Age 36.
Born 1907 at Johnstone, Dumfries. Son of James Kirk and Annie Stitt Hunter; husband of Mary Elizabeth Hunter of Southwick. Killed in Action 23 September 1944, buried at Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Holland.
The first of the Horsa Gliders carrying the 7th KOSB landed at Arnhem on the first day of the battle, Sunday 17 September 1944, to secure the Ginkel Heath position for the 4th Parachute Brigade. On 23 September the battalion were defending the perimeter near Oosterbeek Hoog railway station.
