Laurieston - Falkirk District

Situated at the junction of Mary Street (A803) and Boyd Street (B805)

The Laurieston war memorial is a freestone cross set on a wide and tapering pedestal of rustic freestone blocks.
The cross head is in the tree-of-life style with vines carved on the face and the following inscription is carved in relief on the shaft face:

1939
1945

TO OUR
GLORIOUS DEAD
WHO FELL
IN THE
GREAT WAR

The names of the WWI dead are listed on a bronze tablet set into the centre of the pedestal face, and the names of the WWII dead are listed on two flanking bronze tablets.
I do not have a transcription yet for this memorial as some of the names on the WWI panel were illegible, and one of the additional small bronze WWII panels appears to have been removed when the photos were taken in the 1990's.
The monument stands at the junction of Polmont Road and Boyd Street.

Would be nice to get an up to date photo of this memorial to see if it has been refurbished and the plaques sorted.

"News has reached Laurieston, near Falkirk, of the death in action on November 20 of Private Alexander Muir, 2nd Battalion K.O.S.B. Private Muir, who was a reservist, had been in France since September 15. He had been previously wounded and was recommended for bravery. Private Muir took part in the South African War, in the course of which he sustained a wound."

"Official information has been received by his parents, who reside at Laurieston, near Falkirk, that Sergeant James Brand, of the 2nd Battalion of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, has been missing since November 10. Sergeant Brand, who has been in the Army for six years, went to France with the First Expeditionary Force, and his relatives have had no word on him since November 2. In a number of letters which he sent home he mentioned that the men at the front were being well treated. Sergeant Brand was an expert range-finder, and was also an athlete of considerable note."

"Information has been received by his mother, who resides at Mary Street, Laurieston, near Falkirk, of the death of Private James McLay, B Company 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. The intimation comes from Captain Davidson, commanding B Company, who state that Private McLay died of wounds of the 14th inst. He and three others were in a dug out when a shell struck it. Private McLay, who was 26 year of age, enlisted in the Seaforths eight years ago, and after a years service at home was drafted with his regiment to India, where he remained until the outbreak of the war. Whilst in India he received a medal for his share in the quelling of a native disturbance, and at Delhi Durbar he was awarded another medal, a distinction conferred on only one man in each company. He went to the front in September last."

"His relatives at Laurieston, near Falkirk, have also been officially notified that Lance Corporal Richard Leishman, 7th A. and S.H., has died from wounds received in action. Lance-Corporal Leishman, who had been in the Territorials before the declaration of the war, was formerly employed in the Commercial Bank, Grangemouth."
