Edinburgh New Club is a private members club. It is situated on Princes Street behind a very discreet door.

Thanks must be given to Ms. Wendy Maynard for allowing permission to photograph this large Memorial. The photographs do not do justice to the size of the Memorial as it is positioned in a long narrow corridor.

This shows the top of the Memorial but not all the names.

Quite a few of these names have cropped up on memorials across Scotland. Seems to be a club for landed gentry.

I see Captain Allan Gilmour listed. He is listed as Rosehall in Sutherland but his family owned land and property in Dunbartonshire too as well as other land in the Far North.

Adam - just realised from your WW2 list that one man had a WW1 decoration (or two)
Tennant, J.E. Group Captain, DSO MC RAFVR

The London Gazette Publication date:28 March 1916 Supplement:29528
Page:3425
Captain John Edward Tennant, Scots Guards and Royal Flying Corps.
For conspicuous gallantry and skill.
During the night he bombed the sheds of an
enemy .aerodrome, descending to 30 feet to
do so. He shut off his engine in order to
avoid giving warning, although there was
risk of not being able to start it again. His
machine was much damaged by the explosion
of his own bombs at so low a height. On his
return he requested permission to take
another machine and repeat the operation.

The London Gazette Publication date:2 August 1918 Supplement:30827 Page:9205
Awarded the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry and distinguished service in operations in Mesopotamia: —
Maj. & T./Lt.-Col. John Edward Tennant, M.C. (formerly Bt. Maj., Scots Guards).

I have just had a communication from Terry Denham of "In from the Cold project " and he reports that

CAPTAIN George James Wellwood MONCRIEFF , RASC , died 5th February 1942 is temporarily in the UK Book of Remembrance but soon as his cremation is confirmed by the CWGC he will be moved to the memorial wall at the Crematorium .

Good news that is as he died in a military hospital of meningitis etc.

Capt. Moncrieff is on the war memorial at Rugby School . He is also mentioned in the Edinburgh Academy Chronicle regarding his death in war service .

I have also had a communication from Lt Col Roger J. Binks , keeper at the SNWM at the castle accepting the casualty as a casualty of War :

Captain 102108 George James Wellwood MONCRIEFF , RASC , died of illness on 5 February 1942 UK - Born Edinburgh .

I have had a communication from Lt Col Roger J Binks , SNWM pointing out that

WW 2 CASUALTY

MONCREIFF , G J W , Capt RASC is listed on the CWGC index now as MONCRIEFF and not his birth and death certificate spelling of his name .

I notified Terry Denham ( In from the Cold Project ) and he was informed that the Captain's army papers that the CWGC have show his name as Moncrieff ! Terry will now forward the Birth Certificate showing the Captain's spelling so hopefully the CWGC will have their recent entry amended to show the correct spelling .

The War Memorial at Rugby School lists him as being MONCREIFF and the Edinburgh Academy Chronicle shows his name as MONCREIFF

Now with the Birth Certificate and Terrys assistance this entry will be easily amended

PS

Thank you Ken Morrison who helped me with the early research to prove this Officers death was war related
