This seems to be for the Church of Scotland (Established) congregation.
Printed by McDougall's Educational Co Ltd of London & Edinburgh, with the nice headings: "Honour Where Honour Is Due" and "Our Roll Of Honour In The Great War".
Along the top margin it reads:
"Rev DDF Macdonald MA - Recruiting Officer"
and he was the Church of Scotland minister in Swinton.
According to GAC Binnie's book on Berwickshire churches:
Quote: |
The Free Church minister was also a recruiting officer, and there was a competition between the two ministers as to the number of recruits they could raise.
|
As you can see each man is numbered, 1 to 62.
The 4 casualties are among the 24 on the Swinton civic memorial...
... perhaps the Free Church minister was more successful at recruitment?
(or his flock a lot less fortunate)
I took a dictaphone recording if there are legibility problems.

Swinton Parish Church closed on Sunday 26th March.
There are hopes it may be taken on as a trust by local people as the village lacks a community hall though has a primary school.
There are various individual memorials elsewhere on here. |
