Location: Outside the Sheriff Court on Lewis Street, Stranraer. OS Map Ref: NX 060 606.

The name under other conflicts is not clear from the photos but it reads:
T G HILL

Lovely statue, unfortunately there are no visible foundry or other marks. UKNIWM does not give the sculptor either.

I would have known Colour Sergeant Shingleston as I had been his pay clerk a few years previous to his death but I confess I don’t now recall him. He was killed in Northern Ireland and is also commemorated at

It is a lovely statue, I've seen similar but none quite the same.

Have you any idea what the cap badge is meant to represent?

I leave the cap badge for others to judge, but could it be fusiliers?

This is the best I could get from the photos I took - you should be able to zoom it in a bit.

I like the dimple in the chin by the way, nice touch.

Reverand Herbert Dunn served as a combatant and was one of 14 Scottish Ministers who died whilst serving as a combatant. 4 of the 14 from Dumfries and Galloway. He is also listed on the Scottish Ministers memorial in St Giles, Edinburgh.

George Kinnear is also not listed in Julia MacDonald's book "The faithful, the fallen and the forgotten".

Really nice memorial.

WWll casualty on the right side - Robert Henry Paxton (1904-1944). Sgt. (Flight Engineer) R.A.F.V.R. 550 Squadron (Lancasters) - hit by flak (or night fighter) outbound over Liége. At the time he was the oldest airman serving in Bomber Command - well above average age at 39 (and he was married).
Born in George Street, Stranraer, Bobby was a house painter to trade. Glider pilot as a hobby 1930's.

If anyone has local Stranraer info (newspaper clipping or photo scan) I'd be much obliged.
