Hi,

I am trying to identify John W Bulloch commemorated on the Dunfermline WW1 Memorial.

According to the Dunfemline Journal of 26th Sep 1925 he is listed as:
Bullock, John W. Rae's Buildings, William Street, Pte 7th Black Watch.

The Dunfermline Journal of 3rd October list who I believe to be his brother:
Bulloch, Jas W. Rae's Buildings, William Street, Pte 7th Black Watch
James was killed on the Somme in October 1916 and is buried at Auchonvillers.

I beliieve the correct surname to be Bulloch. Any help in identifying John would be much appreciated.

Rgds,
Alex

There was only one John Bulloch in the 1911 census and he had a brother James. However John was only 7 in 1911 so he would have been only 14 at the end of the war. Address was High Beveridgewell. Parents are William and Margaret.

Given that James is NOT listed on the memorial and we know that he died, I suspect they just got the first name wrong.

Thanks for the replies, however, both James W Bulloch and John W Bulloch are listed on the memorial - so I am not sure it is a name error.

The younger Bulloch was born in 1903 so I have not discounted the fact that he may have run-off and joined as a boy soldier. As we know many young lads did just this. Unlikely, I know, but possible. I am looking to see if he may have served under an alias. I believe the W stands for Whitelaw which was part of his mother's maiden name. His full name being:
John McLeish Whitelaw Bulloch

In total there are 647 names on the Dunfermline WW1 memorial. I have been able to identify 638 of these.

Will post help requests for the other 8 names I am struggling to find.

In the meantime, any help members could offer would be most welcome.

Rgds,
Alex

Thanks to a tip from a GWF member I was able to identify that John McLeish White Bulloch died in Kirkcaldy in 1997 at the grand age of 93.

My search continues .....

Rgds,
Alex
