James Maule is named on Peebles War Memorial. The Book of Remembrance for Tweeddale provides some background to his service and death: https://digital.nls.uk/rolls-of-honour/archive/100999339

His death certificate states that he died on 18 November 1918, of influenza (9 days) and Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Profession: stoker, Royal Navy, discharged.

There is a Pension Ledger on Fold 3 of Ancestry: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=61588&h=21913572&tid=&pid=&queryId=c61a0dd855f3ff674d3313068854c526&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Phz4921&_phstart=successSource . The access page states, erroneously that he served with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, but his rank is given as sto[ker] and his wife Jessie Hannah is one and the same as named on the Death Cert. Death date 19/11/1918.

If anyone can access Fold 3 I would be interested in whether TB was the reason for discharge.

Ken Morrison has sent me Stoker Maule's Service Record. It states, "Man invalided from Haslar Hospital with Tuberculosis Pulmonosis (Attributable". I will forward to Terry Denham for his opinion.

Although he died at Longniddry he was brought back to Peebles to be interred in the cemetery. Will pop along there in a while to see if his grave is marked in any way.

There's no grave marker but we think we found the appropriate space.
