James was a ploughman when he enlisted as Private (3366) in the 1/9th (Highlanders) Royal Scots in June 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October but in the following year he was discovered to be under age and he was returned home in August 1916. At some point he rejoined his battalion but he contracted influenza in June 1918 and was evacuated to Oakbank War Hospital in Possil Park, Glasgow in July where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. James was discharged from the army in December 1918 and awarded a Silver War Badge (B74196) but he died four months later at his home at Whitsome Laws, Berwickshire.

Terry Denham at the In From the Cold Project is now dealing with this case.

Now to find his burial place!
