Dear SMRG Members

The IBCC (International Bomber Command Centre) in Lincoln is currently in the process of compiling and creating a national database of images of memorials to Bomber Command in the UK.

The aim is to link this database to the existing personnel losses database so that for example, if in the future someone is searching for a particular individual, a “pop-up” window will appear showing an image of a memorial to; the individual/the crew/the crash/the airfield/the Sqn or unit etc.

Longer term the project will hopefully be expanded to include all known BC memorials across Europe and beyond (e.g. Australia/Canada/New Zealand).

Currently a handful of IBCC volunteers are engaged in the task of visiting and recording all “known” existing memorials across the UK, along with a welcome steady increase in newly dedicated ones. It is also highly likely that there are more memorials out there that are as yet, unrecorded and which will hopefully come to light as a result of this project.

In terms of distance and topography, the actual physical task of recording these memorials remains substantial. Currently there are several areas of Scotland “suffering” from poor volunteer coverage – which is the main reason for this post . . .

There are specific memorial sites (as listed below) that simply need visiting / recording as and when convenient to you and the taking of a number of specific style images (further details of which will be available on request) before they are submitted for inclusion into the IBCC Memorials database.

In most cases, you might be closer to a number of memorials than you think - or have friends/family in the area or visit an area on a regular basis for work or leisure.

All images taken would be duly credited to the owner and/or the SMRG accordingly. Subject to anticipated approval, in order to further enhance the project, these images would also be shared with the relevant Bomber Command Sqn Assn’s (if still extant) to increase general awareness. A win-win situation for all involved.

The memorials still needed are as follows;

Thanks in advance for your anticipated co-operation in aiding the creation of the first dedicated database of Bomber Command Memorials in the UK

As a return favour, I would be more than happy to provide images of any known memorials that include Scottish Airmen lost serving in Bomber Command - all of which appear on the Panels at the IBCC alongside the back story to their fate

For info a link to the IBCC website is as below

https://internationalbcc.co.uk/

For further info a link to the IBCC losses database -which includes all Scottish Bomber Command casualties is as below

https://internationalbcc.co.uk/history-archive/losses-database/

All you need to do is type in initials & surname then any loss can be viewed A/R. With your help, views of memorials will be added/linked in the future

Ken

Many thanks for the internal images of the memorial to Sgt Cliff-McCulloch, do you have any external ones of the Church?

The loss details are as follows

Sgt A.P. Cliff-McCulloch was the Rear Gunner on 138 Sqn Halifax LL276 NF-F that had departed RAF Tempsford, Bedfordshire for SOE Ops Osric 74 on 01/06/44

The aircraft was intercepted AT 1700m over the sea off Walcheren by a Night-Fighter captained by Fw Willhelm Morlock (III/NJG1) and shot down for his 4th Abschusse

The aircraft crashed at Halsteren 4km NNW of Bergen op Zoom, Holland
Five of the crew were killed, three became POW

He is remembered at the IBCC as below

Additional thanks for the images from Moffat for Hope-Robertson

Loss details as below

F/L A.T. Hope-Robertson was the Pilot of 578 Sqn Halifax MZ511 LK-M that had departed RAF Burn, North Yorkshire at 2305 for Ops Bottrop on 21/07/44

The aircraft was intercepted at 5800M above Apedoorn by a Night-Fighter captained by Nacht-Jagd “Experten” Maj Martin Drewes (Stab III / NJG 1) and shot down for his 47th Abschusse

The aircraft crashed between Oldebroek and Heerd, Holland at 0111

Five of the crew were killed, the N became a POW, the BA evaded

At 0120 Maj Drewes intercepted and attacked a second aircraft - 405 (RCAF) Sqn Lancaster PB174 LQ-P which exploded with violent force.

His Me110 was severely damaged by in the blast and all three of his crew bailed out injured,

His night vision was so badly impaired he only achieved one more Abschusse in WWII

The IBCC entry for Hope-Robertson is as below
