Since 2003 fifty eight Scottish servicemen; non-Scots serving in Scottish Regiments, or commemorated in Scotland; and RAF men who have made their home near RAF Kinloss, have died on active service in Iraq and Afghanistan. (not including the men listed on the 3 Rifles memorial in Edinburgh)

Fourteen of them have been commemorated in Scotland to date. Does anyone know if any of the others have had their names have been added to a war memorial?

I’ve listed them in date order and alphabetical order. If anyone can add any other information to what I’ve collated I’d be very grateful.

List updated 6th July 2016

I cannot add anything to your enquiry, but I will just say how sad it is to have to make such 'fresh' lists and in such numbers. Having searched through countless WW1 and WW2 memorial names I never expected to see the need to add so substantially to them today.

Derek

Thanks for the update. I knew Lt Tweedie was commemorated somewhere in the Borders, it had been mentioned in a 'Sunday Mail' article last year in an interview with his parents but it didn't say which memorial.

Regrads

Adam,
I must admit to not knowing if the name of Jason Smith has been added to the Hawick Roll of Honour.
The local museum is closed until April so I won't be able to check until then.

Allan Squires was cremated in Inverness following the service in Nairn. His name is to be added to the Liverpool University War Memorial (he learned to fly as a member of Liverpool University Air Squadron). I will inform the of any details regarding Al or the other members of CXX Sqn if, and when, it becomes available.

I'm sorry to add another two Black Watch soldiers, and Fife lads again, to this list. They were killed in Iraq today along with another soldier from the Royal Welsh Regiment.

BBC News Scotland have reported it here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/6250822.stm

The men are

Private Scott Kennedy, 20, from Oakley, Dunfermline
Private James 'Jamie' Kerr, 20, from Cowdenbeath

Both from The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Corporal Paul Joszko, was also killed and a fourth soldier was seriously injured in the attack in the Al Antahiya district.

I will add their name to the list above when more details are released. This is the first time since the forum started last December that Scottish soldiers have been killed in Iraq and it seems very strange posting this as it happens. I hope this is the last time I do this for a long time.

I have a copy of the Sunday Times magazine of 28 Oct 2007 which lists (mostly with photo) all the UK personnel who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2002 to Oct 2007. The article contains an interview with the widow of Ross Nicholls from Edinburgh - there is nothing too controversial in that interview so I will post it or mail it on request.
I will scan and post the photos to any memorial thread that mentions the soldiers if I spot them, or if I am prompted.

Quite a few Black Watch men have now been commemorated in Fife in time for this year's Remembrance day. When the new Glenrothes memorial has been posted I'll update this list again for the two men listed on it.

If anyone has heard or read of any other additions to local memorials for Iraq and Afghanistan deaths please let me know.

Regards

Adam
