It was announced yesterday that 20 of the 31 Church of Scotland Kirks are to close in Shetland, with the remaining 11 being run by a single Minister.
Apparently the 31 Kirks have 975 members between them, of which just 1/3rd contribute financially, so the reasoning is quite clear and beyond argument.

This obviously poses a general threat to a number of memorials, there are many more Kirk memorials than on this forum, but they are on the WMR, although the WMR are very short on images of them.

So it would be good to get a comprehensive survey done, imaging and dimensionally.

It would be nice to think there was someone who could work with the Presbytery to ensure they were all re-homed to Village Halls or Shetland Museum/Archives and not just left in abandoned buildings.

The churches to close are-
Sandness- NO MEMORIALS
Foula- NO MEMORIALS

Bigton St Ninian-WMR 70711
Dunrossness- NO AFFECTED MEMORIALS as they are in the Kirkyard
Fair Isle- NO MEMORIALS
Fetlar-WMR 44706 & 70707 [70707 is a tablet to a James Petrie, lost at sea on 18 December 1919, listed in Shetland and the Great War by Linda K Riddell (2012)- a PhD thesis for Edinburgh University, page 348, but I can't find him on CWGC so I am presuming this is not in fact a war memorial]

Hillswick- WMR 70708 & 70709- The Church will not be reopening after COVID due to the poor condition of the building after the 12 month COVID closure. It has, with immediate effect, been placed on the sale market- refer BBC Radio Shetland Evening News Bulletin 29 March 2021
