Newlands South Parish Church, 37 Riverside Road, Glasgow G43 2EG

OS Grid Ref: NS 572611

The building of Newlands South Church as it appears here was completed in 1902. A mere three years earlier, in 1899, regular worship started in a lesser building now serving as the MacMillan Hall. Then, the members were declared a congregation of the United Presbyterian Church. In 1900, with establishment of the United Free Church, a period of intense activity, steady growth and development of Newlands United Free Church began. A further change of name came in 1929 to Newlands (South) Church of Scotland; and in 1989 the brackets enclosing “South” were removed. www.newlandschurch.org.uk/index.html

The following extracts were taken from the booklet “Down by the Riverside: One Hundred Years of Worship in Newlands South Church.

“The congregation decided after hearing proposals made by a specially elected Committee of Elders and managers to proceed with the erection of:
(a) a Stained Glass Window in the Chancel
(b) a Bronze Tablet bearing the names of the Fallen
(c) a Brass Tablet Roll of Honour

These Memorials and Roll of Honour were dedicated by Rev. MacMillan at a service held on Sunday, 19th December 1920. Shortly afterwards, by permission of the Session, a lady member of the congregation, Mrs Stirling, caused a little oak table to be erected, at her own expense, as a Memorial to her own son. The table stands under the Bronze and Stone Memorial to the Fallen.”

“The Rev. James MacMillan was kept busy indeed. The duties of his office in ministering comfort to bereaved and troubled parents and relatives were most faithfully carried out by one who was indeed a true pastor of the flock. His own home was plunged into deep sorrow when his eldest son, Thomas, was killed in an accidental crash near to Montrose.”

“Just as the Guides had anonymously received a set of Colours in May, 1924 so also was a set of Colours presented to the 29th Scout Troop by a member of the Newlands Church Congregation in memory of their two sons who gave their lives in the Great War. The donors were Mr. and Mrs. Barclay, of Cathkin Road and appropriately, a member of the Colour Party was one of their younger sons, Ian. The dedication ceremony, on Sunday 15th November 1925, was conducted by the Rev. A.M. Dykes.”

“A Committee was formed from the Congregation in 1946 to determine the most suitable Memorial to commemorate those members of the Church who had given their lives and those who had served in the armed forces during the Second World War. Two courses were decided upon, the first was that we should have a small but artistic Memorial placed inside the Church.
This was to take the form of a parchment book with the names of those who had served, suitably inscribed, the book to be placed inside a clear casket placed on the small table, itself a memorial to one of our member’s sons who had fallen in the First world War.
The Book was placed in the Church on Armistice Sunday, 9th November 1947 and it was unveiled by Brigadier J.W.H. Gow, Commandant of Erskine Hospital and dedicated by one of our elders, Professor Tindal.

“The work of our Minister under war conditions was beset with difficulties better to be imagined than described. The Manse itself was not spared the great sorrow that had visited other homes. By a strange coincidence a son of the Manse in the Second World War was also to lose his life serving his country in the Air Force just like Rev. MacMillan’s son. Rev. Blair’s elder son, Flying Officer Colin C. Blair, RAFVR, was lost somewhere over Norway and there is no record of the confirmation of his death. In 1946 a dedication ceremony was held on Sunday 13th October of a Communion Cup donated to the Church by Rev. and Mrs. Blair in memory of their son Colin.”

Memorial: RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL, ENGLAND.

The second proposal was that we endow a cottage in the grounds of Erskine Hospital for the use of a disabled ex-serviceman and his family in the hope that we would retain an interest in the family with a view to perhaps educating his children.
The recommendations of the committee were duly carried out but it was to be the spring of 1950 before the cottage that the congregation had donated to Erskine House was completed, dedicated and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Constable and their family.”

Lieutenant CAMERON, DONALD RONALD COLIN
Died 13/09/1915
Aged 21
Highland Light Infantry 11th Battalion
Cemetery/memorial reference: G. 41.
CAMBRIN CHURCHYARD EXTENSION, FRANCE
Son of Donald Ronald and Jessie Cameron.
De Ruvigny's RoH. Commemorated Glasgow Academy & Glasgow University.

Extract from Glw. Uni. RoH
Donald Ronald Colin Cameron was born on the 10th April 1895 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, to parents Donald and Jessie Cameron. His father was a dentist and he grew up in the family home at 59 Langside Road, Newlands in Glasgow.
He began studying Medicine at the University of Glasgow in 1910 at the young age of 16. In his second year of university he took classes in Anatomy and Physiology. He later took classes in Practical Anatomy. Unfortunately his studies were interrupted with the outbreak of war in 1914 and he never graduated from the university.
Cameron was a member of the Officer Training Corps at the University of Glasgow. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant Highland Light Infantry on the 1st September 1914, promoted Lieutenant in July 1915 with the 11th Bn. Highland Light Infantry and subsequently appointed Assistant Adjutant. He died on the 13th of September 1915 in France at the age of 20. His early death cut short a young life and the chance of a promising career in Medicine.
Lieutenant Donald Ronald Colin Cameron is buried and memorialised in the extension to Cambrin Churchyard Cemetery which is located in the small village of Cambrin, approximately 15 miles north of Arras, France. During the First World War the village was only about 800 metres from the front line trenches and was used for front line burials particularly for soldiers who fell in the Battle of Loos.
