A local newspaper has:

Mr M'Kechan, Station House, Annan, has received information that his eldest son, Driver Alexander M'Kechan, Royal Engineers. died on November 5, in the 20th Casualty Clearing Station, France, from wounds received action. Driver M'Kechan, who was years of age, was a compositor in the "Cambeltown Herald" before the war.

Alexander was resident in Johnstone, Renfrewshire when he enlisted.
Has anyone heard of the CAMBELTOWN HERALD ???

Nope, but there's this one: https://www.campbeltowncourier.co.uk/category/news/

Maybe an idea to get in touch with this organisation to ask the question:

Thanks Anne - I will try the latter.

I have just found that there was an ARGYLLSHIRE HERALD AND CAMPBELTOWN ADVERTISER
https://www.nls.uk/about-us/working-with-others/newsplan-scotland/titles_all.cfm
but whether this was around at the time, I'm just not sure.
