Thomas Rankin Milne – Private 295938 – Royal Scots Fusiliers 12th Battalion

Thomas, son of David Stephen Milne of Pitfour, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire, was born in South Shields and the husband of Janet Milne, Coltness Mains, Wishaw. He had married Janet (nee Smith), a 31 year old laundry maid at Coltness Mains Farm on the 27th December 1907 when he gave his address as 60 Ruby Street, Glasgow. He was employed as an electric car conductor at this time but after their marriage was a wood cutter on Coltness Estate.

Private Milne enlisted at Dumfries with the Lanarkshire Yeomanry, attached to the Royal Scots Fusiliers who were part of 229th Brigade, 74th (Yeomanry) Division.

“Mrs. Milne, Coltness Mains, received official intimation that her husband, Private Thomas Milne, had been killed in action in Mesopotamia.”

Private Milne died on the 6th May 1917, from wounds received in battle; he was 34 years of age.
He left a widow and seven children to mourn his loss.

Private T. Milne is interred in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine, Grave A166 and commemorated on Newmains War Memorial.

Just for a wee bit of clarification.
During 1916 the Lanarkshire Yeomanry were serving, as dismounted troops, on the Suez Canal defences and in January 1917 they merged with the Ayrshire Yeomanry to form the 12th (Ayrshire and Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. They advanced through Egypt and Palestine until withdrawn to serve in France. They landed at Marseilles in May 1918.

Thomas's Medal Card does not show a LY service number, indicating that he joined the 12th RSF in 1917.
