Named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire as:

PTE. RICHARD ARMSTRONG 9th ROYAL SCOTS.
Richard Armstrong – age 19 – Private (353418) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Richard was booking clerk at Newcastleton Station when he enlisted.
Born 1898 in Udny, Aberdeenshire as James Richard Telford Armstrong. Son of James McAlpine Armstrong and Elizabeth Ann (Telford) Armstrong of Riccarton Junction, Liddesdale and of 24 Wellogate Place, Hawick, Roxburghshire who had married in 1893 in Castleton.
In 1901 James M. Armstrong (born Canonbie) was a book-seller or colporteur, living with his wife Elizabeth Ann (born Castleton) and son at Station Road, Udny, Aberdeenshire but by 1911 the family were back in Castleton.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

McGLASSON, T . PRIVATE, CLERK.

Named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire as:

PTE. THOMAS McGLASSON SEAFORTH HRS.
Thomas McGlasson – age 25 – Private (S/4095) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Thomas was employed by the North British Railway Company as a receiving clerk at Caldercruix Station in Lanarkshire when he enlisted in Airdrie.
He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1890 in Castleton. Son of the late Andrew McGlasson (died 1915) and Bessie (Minto) McGlasson (died 1910) of Riccarton Junction, Castleton.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Caldercruix Church memorial (as McGlashan)

Named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire as:

CPL. JOSEPH WILSON K.O.S.B.
Joseph Wilson – age 26 – Private (14431) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph was a signalman with the North British Railway Company at St. Boswells, Roxburghshire when he enlisted and he landed at Boulogne with the 7th KOSB in July 1915.
Born 1889 in Crosby-upon-Eden, Carlisle. Son of Thomas and Mary Grace (Coulthard) Wilson of 32 North Hermitage Street, Newcastleton.
Died of Wounds on 8 July 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.

Named on the Jedburgh War Memorial as:

STORRIE, ROBT. PTE. K. O. S. B.
Note: the family name varies from record to record STORIE/STORRIE but is usually the latter.
Robert Storrie – age 28 – Private (9133) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert had been a clerk at Jedburgh Railway Station before he enlisted in the KOSB for 7 years. In 1911 he was serving with the 1st KOSB in India, and he was a reservist, working for the North British Railway Company at the Leith Walk Station in Edinburgh when he was mobilised in August 1914. Robert landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 15 August as part of the original British Expeditionary Force but he was killed a week later at Mons.
Born 1885 in Jedburgh as Robert Simpson Storie. Son of Andrew and Maggie (McMillan) Storrie of Bonjedward, Jedburgh. Husband of Elizabeth (Steel) Storrie who he married in 1913 in Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 23 August 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.

Named on the Jedburgh War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

DICKSON, ROBT. PTE. K. O. S. B.
Robert Dickson – age 28 – Private (900) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a porter at Jedburgh Railway Station and a member of the Jed-Forest Rugby Club. He volunteered for overseas service in September 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1887 in Jedburgh. Son of Isabella Dickson of Richmond Row and of 13 Old Bridgend, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Trinity Church memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.

The Jedburgh Railway Company was absorbed by the North British Railway by Act of 3 July 1860, effective from 31 July 1860, and from that time the line was simply a branch of the North British.

Two brothers killed only days apart are named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

PTE. HUGH McGUIRE. Royal Scots
Hugh Maguire – age 29 – Private (2457) 1/5th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Hugh was employed as a shunter at Joppa near Edinburgh by the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 but was killed a week later.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret Tait Maguire (died 1886) of Galashiels and of James Maguire of 1 New Broughton and of 45 Albany Street, Edinburgh. Husband of Jane (Finlay) Maguire of 4 New Broughton, Edinburgh who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 2 May 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. JAMES McGUIRE. Scots Guards
James Maguire – age 35 – Private (3366) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was living at North High Street in Musselburgh near Edinburgh and was employed by the North British Railway Company as a wagon checker. He was a reservist and he joined the 1st Scots Guards in France in September 1914 before transferring to the 2nd Battalion. He was killed by a sniper while he was repairing a telegraph wire and he was buried in Winchester Post Military Cemetery, Rue-Du-Bacquerot, Laventie but was re-interred at Aubers in the 1920's,
Born 1879 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret Tait Maguire (died 1886) of Galashiels and of James Maguire of 1 New Broughton and of 45 Albany Street, Edinburgh. Husband of Margaret Clark (Baxter) Maguire who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 29 April 1915 and buried in Aubers Ridge British Cemetery, Aubers, France.

Turner , A . Private , Platelayer

Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

PTE. ANDREW TURNER. Camerons
Andrew Turner – age 23 – Private (S/15375) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Andrew was a railway surfaceman when he enlisted in November 1914. He had previously served for four years in the Territorial 4th King's Own Scotish Borderers. He was posted to the 2nd Camerons in France in March 1915 but was wounded a month later and evacuated to the 1st Scottish General Hospital in Aberdeen in May. He returned to France in October but suffered an accidental scalding and it was February 1916 before he was posted to the 1st Camerons. Andrew was killed five months later on the Somme.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of the late Andrew Turner (died 1909) and of Mary (Currie) Turner of Livingstone Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 23 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

On 11 April 1928 the Imperial War Graves Commission wrote to the War Office to check the circumstances of Andrew's death as they had installed a grave marker in the Galashiels Eastlands Cemetery. The War Office confirmed that he had died in France. However I believe the marker is still in place.

Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

PTE. ALEXANDER C. WOOD. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Alexander Cowan Wood – age 40 – Private (7152) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was a railway surfaceman with the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in August 1914. He had previously served during the South African War. He joined his battalion in France in December 1914 and in the following Spring he was wounded by the accidental discharge of a revolver.
Born 1875 in Stow, Midlothian. Son of the late John Wood (died 1882) and of the late Elizabeth (Cowan) Wood (died 1905) formerly of Galashiels.
Husband of Margaret Hunter (Little) Wood of 80 Huddersfield Street, Galashiels who he married in 1899 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Andrew Burrell – age 20 – Lance Corporal (200020) “A” Battalion, Tank Corps.
Andrew was a porter with the North British Railway Company at Stow Station when he enlisted as Gunner (1144) 18th Motor Machine Gun Section of the Royal Field Artillery in May 1915.
Born 1897 in Stow. Son of the late John Burrell (died 1916) and of Hellen (Allan) Burrell, of Cotland Place, Stow.
Missing in Action on20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. THOs. HARDIE, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Hardie – age 35 – Private (20405) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was employed as a surfaceman with the North British Railway Company when he enlisted. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915 and then served in Egypt before they moved to France in March 1916. Thomas was killed on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
Born 1881 in Stow. Son of Thomas and Beatrice (Cranston) Hardie of Thornbank, Stow.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


L.CPL. GEO. J. SMITH, SEAFORTHS
George Jopling Smith – age 23 – Lance Corporal (S/9226) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
George was a surfaceman with the North British Railway Company in Galashiels, Selkirkshire when he enlisted in early 1915. He joined his battalion in France in November but in December 1915 they moved to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra late in the month. He was wounded during the advance to relieve Kut in 1916.
Born 1893 in Stow. Son of George and Mary (Jopling) Smith of Laurel Bank, Stow.
Missing in Action on 22 February 1917 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

Named on the Chirnside Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire as:

Pte. William Bain, 1917.
William Bain – age 20 – Private (30910) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed by the North British Railway Company as a clerk at Hawick Railway Station in Roxburghshire when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was killed.
Born 1897 in Benfieldside, Lanchester, Co. Durham. Son of Joseph Thomas Bain and of Hannah Jane (Dent) Bain of Station Road, Chirnside and of Strathendry Mill House, Leslie, Fife.
Killed in Action on 28 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.

Named on the Ayton Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire as:

CHARLES N. DUNN
Charles Nelson Dunn – age 29 – Private (200266) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 Charles was living at Ayton Law with his family and was employed as a surfaceman by the North British Railway Company. He was also a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and he was mobilised in August 1914. As Private (4420) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and later served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1888 in Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of the late Elizabeth Lauder (Nelson) Dunn (died 1915) of Northfield, St. Abbs, Coldingham and of John Dunn of Northfield and of Ayton Law.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
