The Calgary Daily Herald newspaper, 30th October 1916.

Pte Thomas Carruthers was employed as a driver on #4 Route by the Carlyle Dairy in Calgary, for upwards of 2 years, has been officially reported killed in action. He came to this city 8 years ago and during his time here surrounded himself with a host of friends, who will be greatly grieved to learn of his death. He was a great football enthusiast and was a member of the St. Mary’s team for several seasons.
He enlisted in the 89th Battalion last fall and was stationed in this city during the winter months, leaving for overseas with the regular unit in May 1916. He was later drafted into another Canadian regiment in England and had only served for a short time in the front lines before he fell.
The late Pte. Carruthers was 29 years of age and born in Lanark, Scotland. Besides his parents in the Old Country, he leaves a wife and 2 small children at 1401 Eleventh St. West, to mourn his loss.
