Lori,
The 1/4th KOSB were THE battalion for the Scottish Borders during the Great War.
There are several threads relating to this unit on the forum such as the Gallipoli Old Comrades plaque at Hawick etc.
I'd really appreciate seeing the photograph you mentioned - hopefully I would be able to identify some men for you.

That is definitely the battalion in the photo. I will try and locate the photo and scan it. We don't have the original just a copy but its fine. We sent a copy the photo the regiment for their archives and they confirmed Peter Oliver was from Galashiels.

The photograph was taken at Cambusbarron, near Stirling, where the 1/4th were billeted between August 1914 and May 1915.
It shows a rugby union "7-a-side" team, not a football team.
What I find interesting is that no Hawick men appear in the photograph - I would have thought that a "7" of Hawick men would have won any tournament Razz

Thanks for the info Derek, I never thought of rugby, we just always assumed it was a football team...nice one!

Were you able to find out anything about the other men in the photo?

I got into Pitlochry High School today and photographed the Great War Plaque (to be posted).
One of those who stood out was 'Hamish' Manderston, Cameron Highlanders, for he does not appear on any other memorial in the area.

It seems surprising, but this memorial is not listed on UKNIWM. In fact, there are no memorials listed in Galashiels!

Sadly, the bells, which are an integral part of the memorial, will be silenced between midnight and 7.15a.m. if the council get their way. Despite having chimed out for the past 80 years, 'environmental health' now say they exceed permitted levels. Pity folks have got nothing better to do.

I find the comment from the complainant that they "don't want to get involved" rather irritating. They caused the issue!

Ridiculous decision. I hope it gets reversed.

I was pleased to see that this got coverage in tonight's 'Reporting Scotland'. The council are being made to look very silly.

The very sad state of affairs also featured in the "Scotsman".

Battle of the bells as war memorial chimes silenced

Published Date: 25 July 2008
By Robert Fairburn
A CLOCK which has chimed the passing of time for 80 years has been silenced at night after just one complaint.
Scottish Borders Council has ordered the bells of the war memorial clock in Galashiels, Selkirkshire, to stop between midnight and 7:15am after a bed and breakfast owner complained about the noise.

But the lack of consultation by the council has provoked a furious reaction from the local branch of the Royal British Legion, which is joint custodian of the war memorial, and community representatives.

David Babington, chairman of the legion's Galashiels branch, said he was appalled by the council action.

He said: "When I hear those bells ring out I always think about the servicemen of Galashiels who gave their lives in two world wars. For the flow of history to be interrupted on the basis of a single noise complaint seems frankly ridiculous."

A council spokesman said: "We felt the complaint was not unreason
able."

ONE complaint in 80 years and the chimes are stopped? It's probably the first time in living memory that this Hawick man has ever cided with the populace of Gala.
And as a council tax payer in the Scottish Borders I strongly object to £850 being spent on a silencing mechanism which will be fitted to the clock. Quite unbelievable.

I have sent my objections to the Chief Executive at Scottish Borders Council:
I would ask anyone else appaled by the decision of a "jobsworth" to do the same.

Here's my wee words of wisdom to the Lord High jobsworth:

Can you please explain to me why my council tax is being wasted on a £850 bill to silence the bells on the Galashiels War Memorial due to your office receiving just ONE complaint in 80 years?

Comment duly submitted.

I think everyone should use that comments page to register their disgust at this decision.

I wonder if the owners have thought about the potential loss of business? After all, it wouldn't be difficult for people incensed by this decision to start posting up negative reviews of their establishment on the internet.

I should point out that I do not endorse that kind of behaviour in any way, and I do not mention this here in order to encourage others.

comment submitted - I can't really bring myself to complain too strongly about the complainants - other than "if they don't like it - leave!" but I really think that if a rule makes no sense then you shouldn't follow it. "I was only following orders" is never acceptable. The council should leave the matter to the will of the (local) majority.
