I'm trying to find out more about two graves in the churchyard at Keills Chapel, near the village of Tayvallich, Knapdale.

https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/keills-chapel-and-cross

The graves are marked by simple wooden crosses are, according to local information, of two german submariners whose bodies were washed up on the beach near there during WW2.

They are mentioned here:

https://blog.historicenvironment.scot/2016/08/on-tour-with-david-mitchell/

I cannot find anything to substantiate this online, but there is a suggestion the story was widely reported in local newspapers.

I wonder if anyone is able to look into this further using local resources?

Any information you can provide will be useful.

Thanks in advance.

There are a few scattered German graves in Scotland but most were re-interred at Cannock Chase in the 1960s. If these haven't got proper markers then I would suggest they are the location of the graves before they were re-interred.

Just a guess. Maybe someone else can provide some concrete evidence.

Kind regards

Adam

Thanks Adam. Is there a way that we can cross-reference the German re-interments in Cannock Chase with their original burial location?

It might be worth contacting the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. You can find German sailors buried in the cemetery but it doesn't say where they were previously buried. The CWGC should have that information.

Thanks
