It looks like the four pipers of the 4th KOSB all died in 1915.

There are three James Kerrs of the 1/4th KOSB in the CWGC database, all from the Borders and none from Newton Don. Two of the James Kerrs died in Gallipoli on 12th July 1915 when 1/4th KOSB suffered so badly, and one in Egypt in October 1915

TROOPER FRANK ELLIOT, SCOTh. HORSE.
Frank Hall Elliot – age 34 – Driver (208654) 13th Pontoon Park, Royal Engineers.
Frank was a groom at Newton Don Stables, Nenthorn when he enlisted as Private (4873) in the 1/2nd Scottish Horse Yeomanry in October 1914. He joined his unit in Egypt in February 1916 and later transferred to the Engineers. Frank contracted malaria and died in Kantara.
Born 1883 at Earlsheugh, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire as Francis Hall. Son of Elizabeth Hall. Adopted son of Robert and Margaret Hall (Rutherford) Elliot of Burgh View and of "Mayfield," Jedburgh.
Died on Active Service on 6 October 1918 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Jedburgh War Memorial on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.


PTE. WILLIAM GIBB, K.O.S.B.
William Gibb – age 23 – Sergeant (201002) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman at Courthill, Nenthorn when he enlisted in the 4th KOSB (Reserve) in February 1915. He was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France.
Born 1894 in Ednam, Roxburghshire. Son of Janet Gibb of Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Husband of Elizabeth (Fletcher) Gibb of Mertoun Newstead, Berwickshire who he married in 1914 in Gordon, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 28 June 1918 and buried in Tannay British Cemetery, Thiennes, France.
Also named on the Mertoun Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ROBERT GRANT, K.O.S.B.
Robert Grant – age 24 – Private (7314) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was resident in the area of Kelso when he enlisted there. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1891 in Newcastlton, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Margaret (Graham) Grant of Riccarton Bar and of Byreholm, Newcastleton.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton.

PTE. JAMES HARDIE, 13th CANADIAN INF.
James Hardie – age 35 – Private (204732) 13th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James was working as a carpenter near Herschel in Saskatchewan when he enlisted at Saskatoon in April 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in September and was posted to his battalion in France in November but he was fatally wounded a month later and died in the 6th Casualty Clearing Station at Barlin.
Born 1881 at Yarlside, Earlston, Berwickshire. Son of John and Elizabeth (Fairbarn) Hardie of Girrick and of Blinkbonny, Nenthorn; and of 20 Cambusnethan Street, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 25 December 1916 and buried in Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial.

SERGt. THOMAS HARDIE, SEAFORTH HRS.

Thomas Hardie – age 27 – Sergeant (S/3634) 1/6th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Tom was a gamekeeper with the Duke of Roxburghe when he enlisted in 1914. He landed with the 8th Seaforths at Boulogne in July 1915 and was wounded two months later during the battle of Loos. Tom and his Lewis Gun Section were all killed.
Born 1891 in Nenthorn as Thomas Fairbairn Hardie. Son of John and Elizabeth (Fairbarn) Hardie of Girrick and of Blinkbonny, Nenthorn; and of 20 Cambusnethan Street, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 31 August 1918 and buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France


PIPER ANDREW HENDRY, 4th K.O.S.B.
Andrew Hendry – age 23 – Private (822) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB pipe band. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 at Greenlaw. Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of William and Mary (Scott) Hendry of Girrick Farm, Nenthorn.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial in Roxburghshire.

L/CPL. ANDREW INGLIS, M.G.C.
Andrew William Inglis – age 21 – Lance Corporal (13074) 105th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Andrew had been employed on the Newton Don estate, Nenthorn before becoming a gamekeeper on the Marchmont estate, Greenlaw, Berwickshire. He enlisted as Private (S/15151) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in November 1915 and went to France in early 1916 but transferred to the MGC. Andrew was badly wounded in October 1917 and died a month later in the 4th General Hospital at Camiers.
Born 1896 in Nenthorn. Son of the late James Inglis (died 1916) and of the late Mary (Grieve) Inglis (died 1913) of Middle Lodge, Newton Don, Nenthorn. He named his sister Agnes Tait (Inglis) Clapperton/Stewart of Forest Lodge, Kelso, Roxburghshire as his legatee.
Died of Wounds on 12 November 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial and on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial.


PIPER JAMES KERR, 4th K.O.S.B.
James Kerr – age 27 – Private (779) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed as a forester on the Mellerstain estate, Nenthorn and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB pipe band. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1888 in Swinton, Berwickshire as James Speirs. Son of Charlotte (Speirs) Kerr and step-son of William Kerr of Blinkbonny, Nenthorn and of Yetholm Mains, Roxburghshire (near Kelso) who married in 1890 in Swinton.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PIPER THOMAS LUNHAM, 4th K.O.S.B.
Thomas Lunham – age 24 – Private (778) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a member of Nenthorn Rifle Club and of the Territorial 4th KOSB pipe band. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was wounded a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah. Thomas was evacuated to hospital in Cairo where he died.
Born December 1890 at Newton Don, Nenthorn. Son of George and Janet (Scoon) Lunham of West Lodge, Nenthorn and of Harrietfield Farm, Nenthorn.
Died of Wounds on 24 July 1915 and buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial and on the memorial in Kelso North Church.

PTE. THOMAS MOFFAT, K.O.S.B.
Thought to be:
Thomas Moffat – age 28 – Private (200779) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a hedger at Harrietfield, Nenthorn when he enlisted.
Born 1888 at Wooplaw in Ladhope, Selkirkshire. Son of Agnes Moffat.
In 1891 he was living with his grandmother in Ladhope and he was still with her in 1901 in Jedburgh. He named his grandparents, the late Thomas Moffat and Janet (Stewart) Moffat, as his parents on his marriage register. Husband of Janet (Bell) Moffat who he married in 1909 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


PTE. ROBERT ROBERTSON, ROYAL SCOTS.
Robert Robertson – age 26 – Private (325546) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1892 in Nenthorn. Son of Robert and Annie (Wright) Robertson of Newton Don, Nenthorn. Brother of Thomas George Robertson of Kaimknowe, Kelso, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.


PIPER FRANK WOOD, 4th K.O.S.B.
Francis Melrose Wood – age 19 – Lance Corporal (729) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank was a member of the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was wounded later that month and evacuated to hospital in Malta. He rejoined his battalion but contracted pneumonia and died in hospital on the island of Lemnos.
Born 1897 at Newton Don in Nenthorn. Son of William and Margaret (Melrose) Wood of Newton Don.
Died on Active Service on 4 December 1915 and buried in Portianos Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial and on the memorial in Kelso North Church.

1939-1945

PTE. ALEX. FERGUSON, A.C.C.
Alexander Ferguson – age 38 – Private (215220) Army Catering Corps.
Alexander was a gamekeeper. He died of cancer at his home in Newton Don, Nenthorn.
Born 1908 at Uphall Station, West Lothian. Son of the late Alexander and Sarah (Beattie) Ferguson. Husband of Isabella Paterson (Stark) Ferguson, of Newton Don, Nenthorn who he married in 1935 in Kelso, Roxburghshire.
Died on 5 June 1946 and buried in Nenthorn New Burial Ground. (CWG)


PTE. JAMES FRIZZEL, A.& S.H.
James Frizzel – age 24 – Private (2984210) 8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was employed on farm work before he joined up in June 1939. He served in France in 1940 and was evacuated from Le Havre. He was with his battalion in Tunisia when he was killed in an accident. James was buried in Beja Town Cemetery and was re-interred in July 1944.
Born 1919 at Airhouse in Chanelkirk, Berwickshire. Son of James and Mary Ann (Halliday) Frizzel of Girrick, Nenthorn.
Died on Active Service on 10 March 1943 and buried in Medjez-El-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia.


CPL. GEORGE PURVES, R.M.
George Purves – age 24 – Corporal (Ex 660) 11th Battalion, Royal Marines, Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisation (1)
George had served his apprenticeship as a gardener with Major Thomson at Nenthorn. In September 1942 his battalion took part in a ground and amphibious operation against Tobruk in Libya (Operation Agreement) and George was captured. He died of a pneumonia infection in hospital in Italy and was re-interred at Moro River in November 1944.
Born 1918 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert John Purves (former forester at Nenthorn Estate) and of Elizabeth Jane (Reavley) Purves of Barondale Houses, Newbattle Estate, Dalkeith, Midlothian and of Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Husband of Isabella Knox (Douglas) Purves of Jedburgh who he married in 1939 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 1 January 1943 and buried in Moro River Canadian War Cemetery, Italy.


W/CDM. RONALD R. THOMSON, D.F.C.
Ronald Roumieu Thomson, Distinguished Flying Cross – age 30 – Wing Commander/Pilot (61512) 114 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Ronald was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in February 1941, was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in June 1943, to Squadron Leader in February 1944 and he was acting Wing Commander when he was awarded the DFC in March 1944.
In November 1942 114 Squadron had moved to Algeria to take part in the invasion of North Africa. The squadron then moved to Sicily in August 1943 and then to mainland Italy, attacking German communications and airfields behind the front line using Douglas Boston light bombers. Ronald had taken off from Falconara for a reconnaissance flight over the Padua and Pordenone area but the aircraft was hit by groundfire and crashed at Susegana, north of Venice. Three crew were buried there and were re-interred in Udine in November 1945. One crewman was captured.
Born 1914 in Menstrie Alva, Clackmannanshire. Son of Albert David Thomson and of Doris Estelle (Roumieu) Thomson of Nenthorn House. Husband of Marion Elizabeth (Townsend-Rose) Thomson of Nenthorn who he married in 1939 in Bursledon, Winchester, Hampshire.
Killed in Action on19 February 1945 and buried in Udine War Cemetery, Italy.
