S/43646 Lance Corporal William Cooper
8th/10th Bn. Gordon Highlanders
Died 21.03.1918, aged 39
Commemorated on the Arras memorial
Born in East Wemyss, Fife
Son of George Cooper of Buckhaven and Helen Galloway Cooper of Kirkcaldy, Fife.
Prior to the war William was a Police Constable with Ayrshire Constabulary.
and it appears his closest surviving relative at the time of his death was his aunt, a Mrs Forbes, of Bonnyton, Rayne, who inserted death notices and bequest information following William's death, in the local newspapers.

A nice example of the memorials being for the family in the community and not about where a man was born.
