Going through the list of names on Glasgow Academy War Memorial I have come to Hew McCowan. He also attended Cargilfield Prep and Fettes College before going on the Christ Church, Oxford. On the Christ Church list of fallen alumni there is a short biography about Lt Cowan who was killed at Gallipoli.

It states, "As a memorial to her elder son, Lady McCowan established a club for working girls in Maryhill, the name of the institution being the Hew McCowan Club." Has anyone heard of this: an internet search reveals nothing except a reference to a club with a similar name with connection to the Kray brothers!

Hew McCowan Memorial
95 Shakespeare Street, Glasgow G20 8LE

The building is now home to the Shakespeare Street Youth Club.
(There's even a piccie!)

On the same page there is details of the Glasgow Soldiers Home.
Really interesting stuff!
