My thanks to Ken Morrison who has forwarded to me an excerpt from the Daily Record (19/9/1942). "Giffnock RE Cadet Drowned. Two RE cadets were drowned while swimming the River Trent wearing overalls and boots as part of an exercise near Newark yesterday. With others, the men, Reginald King (27), Hove, Brighton, who was married only a week ago, and Eric Robert Knox (30), single, Park Road, Giffnock, Glasgow, were about three-quarters across the river where it was about 50 yards wide. An officer saved one man and another, and an instructor a third. It was then discovered that King and Knox were missing. Their bodies were recovered."
